shareWell, that's kinda how they did it in the book too... until it got re-released with an 'extra chapter' added to the end.
The excuse of the book was that the story was POV, so it would've been hard to tell that chapter if the narrator was 'out'. I guess the film folks just wanted to surprise anyone who hadn't read the book.
"It's not the severity of punishment that stops criminals: it's the certainty." Commander Shepard
The book does describe how the new body was found, and it's done in an almost dream-like fashion from Wanda's point of view, or as described to Wanda after she wakes up in the new body. It came over as a little bit too convenient in the film, that the one body that didn't wake up happened to be a young woman. There have been quite a few trolls here braying "how convenient for Ian" type posts.
In the book, the cave humans have already had the experience of a body not waking up after the soul has been removed - this is an episode and character (Jodi/Sunny) that didn't make it to the film. When Wanda makes her way to the Doc for Doc to remove her from Melanie's body, Jared realises that something is up, follows Wanda without Wanda noticing and once Wanda has been been rendered unconscious by Doc, holds a knife to Doc's throat, forcing him to save Wanda and put her in a pod ("cryotank" in the book). Doc had been intending to honour his promise to Wanda, to allow her to die.
Jared, the recovered Melanie and Jamie then go out on a raid specifically to find a replacement body for Wanda. They have two requirements. First that the original human inhabitant of the body is unlikely to wake up - they ensure that this is so after removing the soul and before implanting Wanda. Second, that the body should be suitable for Wanda - young, but not too young - and female. Jamie gets to make the final choice, and as he says to Wanda after she wakes up in the new body, "... I thought this looked like you. Because she sort of looks like an angel, and you're good like that. And real pretty. I knew you would be pretty."
They really didn't have time to cover all that in the film, and I don't have a big problem with how they did it. I think it's reasonable for a film-maker to assume that people watching the film have enough imagination to fill in the gaps. There's already a lot of material to cover in 2 hours.
Awww you're no fun. I love surprises. If they showed the process it wouldn't be a surprise anymore, would it? lol
Also, everybody knows how they do it, DUH! Just pay attention to the scene, earlier in the movie, where the aliens shove a soul up Melanie's neck and there you go. THAT'S HOW THEY DO IT. Through cracks/injuries. Have a blast dude.
It was written on the book what happened since Stephenie was assuming it was gonna be a part of the movie
