Two referemces to other movies
When Holmes refuses to ride on a horse and instead he gets a mule, the theme from Two Mules For Sister Sara is played. Quite funny actually as from afar he did look like a nun!
And then when Watson rescues Holmes from Moriarty, he fires a large cannon of a gun which looked very much like the one of the Guns of Navarone.
