It seems like it ended well enough. Moriarty has been taken care of, Watson and Mary are happily married, Sherlock is alive for other future adventures, and Gladstone is still alive for Sherlock to use as a guinea pig for his experiments. I honestly don't know where they could go from here that would be as grand an ending as A Game of Shadows.

Given that this was a box office success, a sequel should be happening. Plus Holmes adding a question to Watson's The End was a bit of an indication that a new adventure was going to happen.

They're trying to get a sequel made, but the issue now is that everyone involved is busy with other films. The studio wants another film, as does the cast and crew. Now it's just a waiting game to see if they can align schedules and get a good enough script.
I do think there's a very strong possibility we will get a third film, but it likely won't be for a few more years.
