Surprised They Got Such A Small-Time Actor For Moriarty

It's strange to see someone this far into their career getting such a pivotal role in a big budget blockbuster when they haven't had anything like it before.

They clearly would have had the budget for a bigger name actor, I personally would have preferred Gary Oldman or Hugh Laurie for the part.

Harris did an 'okay' job in my opinion, Scott's rendition of him in BBC's Sherlock is by far my favourite though.

In my opinion, I'm glad they went with a lower-profile actor. Big-name actors often take away from characters because they're associable with other things. If you want to create an ORIGINAL and NEW type of character, you can't really use an actor that's already been in a bunch of other movies.

I thought Harris was brilliant.

The last scene between him and Downey was the best scene in the film. His facial expression when he discovered Holmes had defeated him was blood chilling. I can't think of any other actor in the role now.

Jared Harris was great. He was great on Madmen and also had a recurring role as bad ass villain David Robert Jones on Fringe about the same time Game of Shadows came out. Cant see how he is an "unknown actor" though but he crushed this role.

Sorry Brother.

So you like a ridiculous manchild over Harris's Moriarty. Scott's Moriarty was just (like so many villains in film these days) a very un-intimidating knock of the Joker.

If you want a very accurate (and best) Moriarty see Eric Porter's take. Moriarty should come of as mature, intelligent and intimidating. Harris does have some of that, while, Scott's is immature and doesn't seem particularly intelligent as played and thus isn't intimidating.

"The game's afoot!"

You are right about Scott's version of Moriarty. His take was one of a manchild.
