Greetings and salutations, everyone. My name is Lito Velasco and I am the Co-Producer for NEVER SLEEP AGAIN: THE ELM STREET LEGACY.
I've seen a decent amount of activity and traffic on these forums for our production, and I wanted to invite anyone and everyone who has questions, comments, or concerns to direct them to me either here or at my email address: [email protected]
I'll do my best to answer each and every one of you in due time, and present any answers that people are looking for in regards to our production.
You've done an excellent job. I watched disc 1 on Friday and have just started going through Disc 2. You seriously packed this DVD so full of content that I'll be going through it for the next two weeks, I think :)
I was curious, you interviewed so many of the actors -- did you reach out to Johnny Depp, Patricia Arquette, or Lawrence Fishburne? Did they turn you down due to their pricetags or their availability?
I was just curious.
EXCELLENT DVD -- I highly recommend it.
He can NOT be a part of me! Batman does NOT eat nachos!!
First of all, thank you so much for the praise regarding our documentary. It means a lot to us to know the fans like it so much.
Second, yes...we reached out to every single one of the people you mentioned (and then some!), but due to scheduling conflicts, we were not able to get them in for an interview.
But, the 90 other people hopefully makes up for the absence of the others!
Warmest regards,
Lito ---- LITO VELASCO, Co-Producer NEVER SLEEP AGAIN: THE ELM STREET LEGACY www.elmstreetlegacy.com
Lito, it is a rare thing that a producer of a film appears on a message board like this. For that, I want to thank you big time! I received the dvd and poster from elmstreetlegacy.com about a week ago. I am a full time father of a 2 year old girl and my son was born 3 months ago. So, naturally, the DVD is still sitting on my dresser unopened. lol The poster for me is very very special. In fact, it is the only signed item that I have here. I saw Dream Warriors in 1987 after being duped by a friend of mine thinking it was a comedy (I was scared to death of Freddy and only 14) Much to my surprise, I was able to get through the entire film and became an instant fan! Since then, Heather Langenkamp in particular has always impressed me by the way she carried herself in those films. I was a theatre nut back then and eventually received a Bachelor's in it. But anyway, she impressed me. I don't know if you have any contact with her but if so, could you please tell her from Brad that she is a class act and that I love the autographed poster and her performance in not only those films but everything else she has done! Thank you so much! I will get back here when I finally am able to watch the DVD and let you know what I thought. From the reviews and the raving Lito, it appears that all of you have done a most excellent job!
i saw all 4 hours of the documentary in one sitting and loved it. it was a HUGE improvement over the disappointing HIS NAME WAS JASON.
i enjoyed this documentary 100% more than the god awful remake.
so i had no complaints as far as the content . enjoyed the extended interviews as well. with the extras the sound bothered me a bit but the main focus was the 4 hour doc and it was well done.
when it goes from person to perso the volume is either too soft or too loud. in one instance i noticed the music playing in the background was louder than when someone was talking.
i have a 10 year old DVD player hooked to a surround sound system so it was hard to not notice it.
but it was only with the extras which i only viewed in one go around. havent tried it on a different dvd player yet. so not sure if it was just an issue with my old dvd player.
I have one question what's up with that chick from "Freddy's dead" Why he she wearing that strange make up and why does she seem to have some sort of lesbian sex slave who stares with a blank look at the camera? He she an artist now or something? It's funny because its so random lol
I wouldn't go so far as to say the remake was "quite good" personally, it was decent and the bluring of dream/reality sequences were great, but for me it only beats Dream Child and Freddy's Dead of the original series. Never Sleep Again alone was much more enjoyable for me but I have to admit, much though I missed Robert Englund as Freddy, Haley was pretty good. I hope if there's a follow up they get to make something a bit more unhinged than they did this time.
As to the OP, Lito, congrats. Amazing work by everyone involved and it's very much appreciated.
Two years, sweetheart. I'll be there as soon as it's done, and we'll never be apart again.
How was the remake 'god awful'? It was actually quite good.
here are a few of the things that i dislike about this remake.
*didnt like the pacing of the film. thats the biggest problem i had with this film. it felt so accelerated and im sure thats for the target teen audience with their short attention spans, but the story doesnt flow along like youd expect with them fast forwarding like they did. so it just really irked me. theres no time to even get to know the characters, which really throws things off balance. there was no time to linger and give some dialogue. the original had a slow build to things and it worked.
*i thought the cgi in this movie was cheap looking. i guess i just prefer practical effects. those practical effects just worked so well in the original. i wanted them embrace what the CGI could do , which was enhance the dreamscape than practicals could ever afford to allow. and i felt they just didnt utilize them in this remake.
*the one scene i never forget from the original is when Nancy falls asleep in the classroom. to me that was just such an effective scene. it was the one part of the entire film that really creeped me out as a child. to see it butchered in this remake, was very disappointing. not only is it not Nancy but they use CGI to have all the students explode within seconds. completely took me out of the movie. what should be this eerie dream of the character discovering the boiler room and coming to the revelation that what happens to their body in the dream results in reality, turns out to be just a cheap scare.
*the more Freddy talked the less i liked him. i was hoping to see a more menacing Freddy and didnt get it. every time he delivered any kind of dialogue he was just so flat. he wasnt at all scary or evil or creepy.hes not physically imposing against these teenagers. had they gone with the original choice of Kevin Bacon as Freddy then i probably would have enjoyed the character more. Haley was wrong for the role and wasnt served well by the material. didnt like the makeup either, at times he seemed like a muppet. said to be realistic looking but it just didnt work for me.
*Freddy is a child molester, not a child killer.he just touches them and hurts them but doesnt kill them. this to me has forever changed his iconic status. so you cant cheer for the killer in this modernized version of the character. and yes i know that Craven initially intended to have Freddy as a pedophile AND killer, but because there was highly publicized pedophilia cases during the time of making the film,Craven didnt want to feel like he was utilizing that for extra publicity.so he removed it from the script. making him repulsive is asking me to be scared and like the protagonist.thing is he wasnt scary and Nancy in this film is uninteresting & doesnt have any screen presence. they are going darker but its not fun to watch and its kinda pretentious cause they arent following through with any of it.
*no showing the origin of the glove. you dont see him make the glove. of all scenes to rehash, THIS was the one!! and they didnt do it. most of what you even see of Freddy before hes in the dreams is all in a montage of clips. theres no actual scenes that show what i was really hoping to get with this remake. which was the origins of Freddy. because honestly whats the point of a rehash of the original? if theres gonna be a remake then it should have more depth, more dramatic tension, and better actors. because the original as much as i enjoyed it..it has its faults..which i was really anticipating this remake to resolve. but it just failed miserably.
*for a few moments in the film they try to make it seem like if Freddy was wrongfully burned. and was a victim because the parents got the wrong idea & the children lied about being molested. i thought they were gonna take it there, and i could have gone with that approach because at least it was an approach at something different.. but they then turn things around again and to me the whole thing just seemed unnecessary and the delivery of those scenes happened so quickly that it seemed ridiculous. also have a problem with Freddy's backstory because it takes place in the 90s not the 50s or 60s. who the hell would let a single male gardener live in the basement of a pre school in the 90s??
*didnt buy the whole plot of all these kids having no recollection of knowing each other or of being molested. repression i could get, but i wouldnt think itd happen to ALL the kids. just seems too convenient and lazy.
what really bothers me above all is that the director cant even stay in the same frame for more than 5 seconds, hes always cutting from one shot to another. which is disorienting. the only time they ever linger for more than 5 seconds is when Freddy is gonna attack. which takes away any tension at all since u can pinpoint exactly when he will appear because of this. the whole film for that first hour seemed like nothing but clips and snippets and not full thought out scenes.
i wouldnt say im a 'hater' because i wanted to like this film. im a fan of the Elm Street series and was in anticipation to see this remake. only detail i did like was the whole micro-napping. it explained why the characters fall asleep so quickly. apart from that one thing, visually the only appealing thing was the way Freddy rubbed his blades together when approaching a victim. probably the only thing Haley brought to the character but it worked. everything else was just awful. seemed like a waste of time to watch this movie. my theory as to why this movie turned out so terrible, was that perhaps the director turned in a 2 hour cut and the studio slashed it to bits to make it suitable for teens with short attention spans. if this is true then if theres an extended cut that turns up on DVD that will resolve all the issues i had with it. then ill give this film another chance when its on home video.
You've pretty much hit the nail on the head of why the remake does not work, so thank you for that because now I know I'm not the only person that can't stand the remake. Though I'm going to nitpick and say because of poor grammar I didn't understand your point of "they want me to hate Freddy and root for the protagonists and that's bad". You do realize that prior to any sequels after Nightmare 3 depicting Freddy as a wise-cracking smart ass he was supposed to be this dark intimidating killer and we were supposed to side with the protagonists because they were well-written characters as opposed to anything after Nightmare 3 that turned all the characters into unlikable people that you just couldn't wait for to die as is what many other horror sequels were doing to their protagonists. If anything, that's the only thing the remake does right is return Freddy to his dark serious personality he had in the first three movies.
Also, as for this whole business with this Lito person being a "co-producer" of the documentary, exactly how do any of us know this is true? Why should we believe him? Anyone could come on here pretending to be whoever they want. For all you know, I could be Jesus Christ or Bill Cosby or Katherine Hepburn. But just because I claim it, doesn't make it true.
Oh members of IMDb, yours is a dim-witted and insane lot!
Lito, this isn't really a question regarding Never Sleep Again but since you are a fan first and foremost, I thought maybe you might know. This is in regard to Freddy's Dead. First off, why does IMDB list the original version as 105 minutes when the original version I recall seeing in theatres was 89 minutes?? Also, the teaser poster lists Freddy's birth as November 2nd 1984 but everywhere I look I find its release date to be about 2 or three weeks later on November 16th I believe. Why is that??? Did it have a premiere on November 2nd before it went wide??
Your fellow producers Daniel Farrands and Thommy Hutson were part of the creative team behind HIS NAME WAS JASON. I was wondering if you could provide any details as to why that documentary was not put together like NEVER SLEEP AGAIN (near perfection IMO).
Personally I was really disappointed that I purchased the dvd when it was released and then just a few months later a "collector's edition" was released with a commentary track that wasn't on the original. I felt really jipped for having bought the first one. People rightfully complain about studios making people double dip but to do it only a few months after the original came out? Inexcusable.
I was the DP on the doc, and while I don't have a producer's "credit", I was heavily involved with NSA from it's earliest stages to it's end. If you wouldn't mind, I'd like to address your issue because you're right..it's a valid complaint.
We did this whole documentary for nothing. Literally it was 7 or 8 of us, not getting paid, just working on this thing for 7 months straight...racing against the clock. We all had our own time (and sweat/blood) poured into this behemoth. When it came time to get the DVD released, there was some issues getting it into the major retailers such as Best Buy, Target, Fry's Electronics...all that jazz. We pushed and pushed, but to no avail. Our first release was mainly sold online and a few rare retailers out there.
Now fortunately you fans found us and bought the dvd, and we are so appreciative of that. Seriously, we had no idea this thing would even sell. However a few months goes by and still no sale to Best Buy or any of the major chains. Now while the online sales were good, they weren't coming close to covering the cost of what we owed to people for making this thing.
Then it came up that the major chains would pick it up if we put together a special edition. So our hand was kind of forced and we did the only thing we could do: put together a commentary, touched up some green screen bits, edited some music, and re released it...even though we all were very reluctant to do so.
I suppose all that one can say is sorry, but I just wanted you to understand where we were coming from. If you never picked up the second edition, I do a weekly podcast called SAME SH!T DIFFERENT SHOW where I have a conversation with a different filmmaker a week. Last week was one of the directors on NSA, Andrew Kasch. We go through the hell it was making it for a full hour. Highly recommend you check it out if you liked the flick.
Hey man I enjoyed it thoroughly and even if all my disc had was the doc by itself I'd still call it a 4 star release. I just wish I'd waited about buying it now. Hah.
