WHO THE HELL WAS THE SOUND DESIGNER FOR THIS?

OK, number 1) I'm actually a trained audio engineer and 2) I'm a Mustang fan.... So with that said, and I know this was filmed in South Africa, did ANYONE on the sound crew have even the remote knowledge of what a Mustang sounds like... OR for that matter an American V-8? I actually stopped watching the movie right after the first chase scene to come type this. I personally don't and have never worked on a major motion picture, but this was so distracting that I don't think I can continue to watch the movie.... (and no I didn't pay for it either so no skin off my nose)But seriously! I'm pretty sure the actual sound of the Mustang (which had 427 on the head rests), was that of a Japanese straight 6, like that of a R-34 or Supra. This is honestly the most glaring bit of lackadaisical audio work I've ever seen! I could have done a better job at home on my laptop!

reply

OMFG!!!!! Ok so I tried to finish watching it until I found another GLARING mistake. In the rundown of the features of the '72 Buick Riviera Boattail, the engine is listed as a 430CI v8 "Nail Head".... WHO WAS THIS IDIOT!.... First it's "Nailhead"... NO SPACE.... second nailheads were only used from '53 to '56..... Third nailhead displacements were 364, 400, 401, and 425!.... LASTLY the '72 models had 455ci.... now I suppose they could have put IN a 430... no problem, so I'll leave that alone.... HOWEVER, for a movie that would obviously drawn in a lot of car guys..... they could have gotten something right! Now mind you these are just the things I noticed while watching the movie... I was eating, talking to the wife and kids, petting the cat, kicking the dog, fapping,.... ummm k you get the picture...

SCREW THE SOUND OF A CAR, CAN YOU BELIEVE A PRISON LETS INMATES KILL EACH OTHER ON TV???

reply

hahaha ahhh ha

reply

Since this is in the "future", I'm sure they expect a certain suspension of belief, say for example, the engines being equipped with the latest injectors, hybrid-boosting tech, etc, they may sound different than the current engines you're used to.

In other words, it's a fantasy movie...

reply

Uhhhggg........ and you two are why film makers continue to produce such crap!

reply

You must be an awful person to watch movies with if your're going to complain about stuff like engine noises. Jesus, how do you sit through fiction movies?

reply

[deleted]

If anybody's a troll here, it's you two.
This guy is talking about the film - and you're getting your kicks out of calling him names and declaring he's an *beep* possibly a troll and "one of the most annoying pricks in history"(yep: you know how to keep things in perspective kiddo!) - simply for having an opinion?

Grow up, is all I can say.

reply

cinesimon wins the round

reply

Quite the contrary to your post, I'm wonderful to watch movies with. As for being an annoying prick... well it's obvious it takes one to know one. I only complained about things they GOT WRONG... not artistic choices, not fabrications, just blatant errors. At this point you are obviously the troll here, along with several others up the tread. Were you guys actually the sound crew for this movie because they are the only ones that could defend such errors.

reply

lol I'm in filmmaking as well (no I haven't been a part of any Hollywood productions) but I have to say dude.. you need to calm down. Movies and real life often don't match up. I don't think anyone cared enough to look at real tiny minute details on this set. Let it go.

Yes, because he has a different opinion to you and I simply MUST make him an "awful person".

How ironic that you question his ability to sit through fictional films - when you have serious issues with the decency of a person simply because his opinion is not one that you share - about such trivial stuff as this, no less.

Get a grip!

Well, you were watching this crap too, at least you started to.

I was just thinking the same thing! Except I'm thinking holy crap these 2 are probably in the generation they say is the future of the human race. If they are the future then the human race is in for a rude awakening, with a side of a kick to the lower extremities!
If you weren't bothered by this or didn't notice then obviously what are you doing reading the post let alone replying to the dang thing. Me and Scott and many others all in agreement the sound engineer in the movie was on acid. Also we too are thinking you trolls must be hell watching movies with. If you don't pay attention to little things like that you can't see that your bf if a girl or a gf if a boy or the other -NOHMo🧚 is sleeping with your best friend, cause your just simply not observant enough to notice the small things. You two are everything that is wrong with the world today and your lack of empathy for others is why we can't fix it. Your kind is the kind that thinks your 💩 don't stink! Newsflash it does. Scott was curious about something and went to a place he thought was safe from being ridiculed and how do you know your bullying didn't affect this person any. Your no better than the people that you get bullied by or that take away your voice. Yes rather you know or not to give someone smoke for asking a honest sincere heartfelt question about something that bothered the person is attempting to take away their voice. Kinda like Joe Biden when he took aim at over half of the USA by saying. MAGA REPUBLICANS are the biggest threat to national security and the American Democracy! I'm a MAGA REPUBLICAN and darn proud of it! Try to take my voice see what happens. Not a hole you can crawl into to protect you from me. I will never be silenced I have every right to my God given Constitutional rights. If you don't have a real answer for Scott simply keep your rude comments to yourself. Your wasting everyone's time and patience.

reply

OK, where to start...

Yes I too have worked as a sound engineer in film / TV / Theatre & live concerts / festivals.
I am used to (was used to) recording for movies, dubbing in the sounds (post production & adding extra sounds (Foley).

I have yet to watch the film, but I can say this..
Recording cars for such a movie & its sequences is not that easy.
The sound of a Mustang can often sound like any number of cars depending on the work done on the vehicle itself.

From what I recall of the original & the remake, these cars are cobbled together out of any vehicles / engines / parts that they can get ahold of.

At anytime in this movie do you see the mustang with its hood up?
Do we see the engine under the hood?

I'm willing to watch the movie & suspend belief, ignore certain things such as what engine sounds I hear... heck, if I wasn't able to do that, I'd never have sat through the Batman movies where the engine was a mixture of sounds from a fighter jet, a lions roar & several other bits at differing speeds overlayed.

==//==

I had a late 60's Buick Riv' with the boat tail too...
Mine had a Buick Marine engine, big noisy bugger it was.

From trying to find out why I had a marine engine in my car when I purchaed it 5th hand, well I was told they stuck anything in those things that made them perform.
No ten cars were the same off of the production line with dif' engines, trans etc..

===//===

It's just a movie... if you want to hear what a mustang sounds like, go watch a drag race.. oh wait, you won't hear a mustang sound like one there either as they work on those engines to create high performance...
Some have blowers, turbos, twin turbos, run NOS etc...

Once you hear a tricked out Mustang used for drag racing you may uderstand how it could sound like a Japanesse car.
Might even get to hear one sounding like a Mack Truck with straight threw pipes too..

reply

I am also an audio engineer, an my experience tells me that it's in fact not at all difficult to reproduce the correct engine noises.
It's a long-mastered skill.
But I'd have to agree, the cars in this movie are cobbled together from all sorts - and given the agility required for the 'competition', it's not at all surprising that the large muscle-type cars would be retrofitted with tighter, more efficient Japanese motors.

reply

Ok reply to all here. The IF you hear a mustang was really insulting to be honest. I'm a mustang FANATIC! see the 351W in my tag? That's for 351 Windsor... the motor I took out of a 69 Mach 1 and put in my 90 mustang notchback. I've been to more mustang race than I can count. I can here a car drive down the street, tell you it a Ford and tell you if it's a 5.0/5.8, a Big Block, or one of the new modular motors. The vehicle in question wasn't one of the "cobbled together cars". It's a bright YELLOW Shelby. Now as Audio Engineers if you had bothered to watch the movie before commenting....... you would know what I'm talking about. The buick.... Look dude.... I've actually driven a 70 stage 3 GSX conservitively a $50,000 car.... I know what motor that buick should have had and they were WRONG in the movie. As for all the rest of you.... "suspension of belief" is paramount in a movie. It is the movie's staff and actors JOB to make us "suspend belief".... If there are errors they aren't doing their job. Watch the movie, the story wasn't horrible, the cinematography wasn't bad, the acting was on par from what you'd expect from this cast. NOW, this a MOVIE ABOUT CARS!.... there are going to be CAR GUYS watching it. They have a duty to get it right!

reply

I work in a ER if I looked at everything they do wrong in hospital or doctor stories I would be missing out on allot of good fictional movies; I mean this is not a documentary. I loved this movie it explained allot of what was missing in the first movie which I also enjoyed. Its a Prequel which is why people are getting confused; it is based on the original Frankenstein movie; way before Jesen Ames (Statham) was set up to play this character in DR.

reply

i thought the sound was spot on. sounded like a mustang to me

reply

mustang sounds like a jap engine!? dat is no more equal than a basket ball player sounding like a wimpy 11 yr old kid!! hahaha
Anyways i understand hw u mite feel for dat, i dont own a mustang but hav always been a fan of both the mustang n the charger :D
I think u shud stop arguing here as there are subjective responses here, n there aint no point coz if there are sensible pepl, then there must b non-sense pepl too :)
chillax ;)

reply

Everybody seems to be audio engineer in IMDB. ROLFMAO! Mustang is overrated POS IMHO. Americans think that Ford is quality. Little do they know...

reply

Yes and no. You're right in that the 430 was not part of the Nailhead family as it was part of the later "Buick Big Block 400/430/455" family introduced in '67 and designed to replace the 2nd gen Nailheads, however the 2nd gen Nailhead lasted until '66, not '56 as you incorrectly stated.

In any case you're kind of getting bent out of shape for a pretty minor detail. It's a movie dude, a low budget one at that. There was a lot more that sucked about this film that a few minor goofs like the awful race sequences with pretty much no action (all they did was crash cars into walls and film it in slow motion which was just lame). I think you expected a bit too much from a crap movie.

reply

Others may flame you for this kind of comment, but I like hearing about these things. So thanks.

reply

The first car, the yellow black one indeed had really really poor sound design. It really did not sound powerful at all. And what was up with that car chase? Sure he was to be caught eventually but it looked like that car could not even go slightly faster than the cop cars...

reply

film set in an alternate future = your knowledge of "car sounds" and make/models/engine numbers.............

Yeah, one could swear that a new Shelby could outrun a mid-90's Falcon and whatever year the Crown Vic was. Either the driver is actually rubbish or Shelby's are painfully slow.

reply

i agree with all the negative responses though i think they go too far but i just want to commend you on stating film facts how ever super nerdy as this is a website for film talk and facts and absolute nonsense as long as its film related and accurate...so if what you say is ture well done..though it surely did not need to be said though maybe you can meet like minded people so maybe its not all bad.

Here is a serious question(4 u & me)

..when famous a-list stars have sex on film (even when using body doubles) is it their own grunts and sighs we hear or stand-ins??? (now that's got to be up your street..no / yes?) ;>

reply

As one commenter pointed out previously, it's notoriously hard to capture the sound of a car's engine... which is probably why most of the cars in Gran Turismo sound nothing like the real thing, despite the mountains of audio recording they've done over the years (and I've spent a LOT of time around a LOT of cars... it's obvious how off the sounds are).

The thing is, this movie doesn't exactly cater to car nuts. I understand your frustration, but it's one that I see in practically EVERY movie I watch. I don't even bother to get worked up if the sounds are at least in the ballpark; a Mustang that sounds like an actual V8, any V8, is as close as Hollywood will ever get. I'm happy if I don't see a 4-cylinder that sounds like a V8 or peels out with ease.

Hollywood uses a TON of stock sounds. In almost every single movie I've ever seen, there was some kind of stock sound that I have heard in probably a dozen other movies, at least. Not just cars, but all kinds of different sounds. I'm not an engineer, but I'm fascinated by sound and am always acutely aware of what I'm hearing. If you want to enjoy movies, you have to just accept the fact that they usually have such flaws, and appreciate the few that manage to do things right.

Ironically enough, the Mustang's new V6 sounds quite similar to the Nissan VQ37, though a bit raspier.

reply

Ok...when i saw the title of your post i was really looking forward to someone maybe having the same opinion as me about the sound design on this movie. But man, you're specific. I dont know what that specific car sounds like or what not, but it's definitely NOT the only problem with the sound on this movie.

Now, the movie wasn't unwatchable by any means. But a much better sound engineer would've benefited this movie. Voices and sound-bytes that didn't match 70 percent of the time to what was actually going on or what the actors were reacting to. Weird choices with the levels of music and action. I dont know, it all just seemed off. Now that's just me, the movie was ok. Not better than the first, but the way it connected them both almost redeemed the whole thing. Which is pretty cool.

reply

I honestly thought that the finished version you see and hear would boil down to both the director and editor.
I'm pretty sure they have 'dailies' and if there's a sound or mix that doesn't sit well with the director while the tracks are being laid down I'm almost positive he'd speak up and say to get it fixed or tweaked.
I find it hard to believe that the audio engineer has complete and utter control of his sounds and mixes without any input whatsoever by the 'higher ups'.

reply

Honestly, you are correct, but (in this movie) it seems that no one had any idea what a major part of a film the sound can play. Distractions like these in a movie are things that stand out to me the most. Others might have not noticed the problems I'm talking about, but have picked out a problem with continuity or other things. In this case however, these were the problems that had a negative effect on me and how I was able to enjoy the movie. But thank you for at least having the decency to make a post with valid points that can actually be discussed, rather than name calling, or just being a dick in general like a large portion of the posts.

reply

You're getting angry at the sound design of a direct-to-video movie. Stop it.

"Fate rarely calls upon us at a moment of our choosing."

reply

I actually thought this was a legit thread on the sound design (because in all it did suck) but you complain about the sound of a specific car? Give me a break! The like entire film's sound sucked in general. The sound editor didn't take into account sound space and a lot of the ADR and background talking was way too much in the foreground while the entire car sequences was missing dozens of sounds. I think they rushed this release. It was also obvious a lot of the dialogue was thrown on top of a sequence and it just sounded and flowed horribly. Like when the girl had the mini-gun on top of the car shooting back at Bill. She kept saying all these cheesy one-liners that also sounded unedited and with no real background noise. Weird sound design and editing.

reply

Javier Bennassar was the sound designer, I haven't seen the film. I don't think I can believe your story though, that part about you having a wife was a bit far fetched.

reply

OK, so are you questioning my sexuality, my ability to have a wife, or are you just trolling in general? Really... I'm serious.... was there actually a point to your post? You stated that you haven't seen the movie, so do you have anything useful to contribute or are you just another jackass saying things behind your computer that you'd never have the balls to say in real life? I'm going to reiterate and expand on a few points here.

1)I'm a trained audio engineer.
2)I'm a Mustang fanatic and a car enthusiast in general.

Combined, this makes things like appropriate and believable sound design of a "car movie" important to me. Lets change the perspective a bit. If this was a Saving Private Ryan, and instead of accurate and believable explosion sounds it had been say the sound of your mom farting. Now, that may have been funny, but it would not serve to allow the audience to suspend belief and feel a part of the story. Now, I'll fully admit my initial reaction to the the movie may have seem irrelevant to some, but it doesn't make me wrong and it doesn't give you and others the right to flame someone for having an opinion.

So are you just like the other jerks who have posted derogatory statements or are you interested in discussion where you might learn something? If the answer is just being a jerk then you can stop now. It really doesn't doesn't have the effect your looking for.

reply

Point 2 above combined with the general insane/agressive rantings in all the other posts on this thread led me to believe it's unlikely you would have been able to find a woman willing to put up with you, it was not trolling, it was sarcasm, plus nobody else had bothered answering the question in your title so I thought I would, but now you come to mention it, you do come across as kind of a prick.

And you have mentioned point 1 a lot, I think everyone knows you're a sound designer by now thanks.

reply

LMAO .... +1

you should watch Death Race 2000 for us please and point out the sound problems for me in that movie, I would be quite interested to know.

are the go-kart sounds authentic or phony? clearly you have an issue watching action/sci-fi movies.

reply

Ahh, I would assume the women that you've found to put up with you are probably top notch, but I digress on that subject. As for your other statement.... I've NEVER said I was a Sound Designer, nor would I ever make such a claim, or care to do that job. The fact you don't know the difference further demonstrates that your opinion matters very little in this thread. Have a wonderful day at McDonald's.....

reply

I apologize, Audio Engineer, not Sound Designer, I don't see how I made such a glaring error since you mention it in 78% of your posts, I seem to have trouble concentrating when reading your posts as they are peppered with full stops masquerading as punctuation.

As for the ladies? Yes they have been top notch thanks, I tell them I drive a 72 Buick Riviera Boattail with a 430CI v8 Nail Head, it doesn't really though, it is a Plymouth with '72 Buick' written on the side in Tippex and it has the engine from a 96 Toyota and now it sounds sweeeet, they don't know the difference though and they are putty in my hands, I take them back to the basement of my parents and we watch straight to DVD films and pick holes in the costume design.

reply

The McDonalds here had to be closed down as somebody went on a killing spree there and it is now a crime scene, during the incident the attacker was said to be shouting something about being so distracted by errors in films that he couldn't continue watching it and saw a rampage through McDonalds as the next logical step. Apparently the restaurant will be closed for some time so I am unable to work there, I have being passing the time by renting films and redubbing muscle cars sound effects with the sound of my electric toothbrush then recording a new dvd and returning them so other people can rent them.

reply

To all you genius's on here attacking Scott and think this car sounds like a Mustang. The one piece at a time, 2010 \427 Shelby GT500 V6/V8/ Heinz 57 barely sounds like a V6. Go flatten your tire then open your trunk and take the spare out and car jack out. Now take the flat tire off and replace it with your spare. Did you get it done? Good your a moron. To the ones that said they race at a track or raced Mustangs, or something of the sort. I'll lay every penny I own that says you couldn't even get your car off the trailer especially if you say a person can't tell the difference in a really beefed up V6 and a supercharged Shelby GT 500 with 540 horsepower and a 0-60 of probably right under 4 seconds and a quarter mile time of around 12 seconds or less from the factory let alone any work would just make it a rocket with a very noticeable V8 rumble that you can't get in the best V6 out on the market and definitely if put in the same car would not out perform if max performance so I just know you and your team had absolutely no success at by the way so your working with the county picking up trash with the other inmates. I'm sorry you guys on here giving him crap because you don't agree with what he says so like Joe Biden and the Democrats you want to destroy his credibility and take his voice away.To the one saying Americans and their precious V8 engine stupid Americans, careful your stepping on thin ice talking about our cars and our country where men gave their life to protect like my grandfather. I'm not gonna let you run our country down you pin headed loser who you can't tell where his head begins and his hind end begins. America, land that I love, the Land of the free, Home of the brave. That means don't F/ with America. I'm not making any threats to anyone. In summary If you don't like a post you don't have to read it dummy.Dont be rude
