I grew up in the 70s and this would have been questionable. There is no way he would have been running neck and neck with Carson. This talk show would have been stupid even by 70s standards.

Despite this, I really enjoyed this movie!

I guess I saw 'the show' as comedy and that the characters were really caricatures.

It doesn't look too different from the talk shows of that era.
