Location shooting was definitely the way to go!

I'm so glad the producers decided to stop trying to dress up Toronto to look like other countries, and actually go and shoot in those other countries!
Makes all the difference in the world.

Plus, you learn interesting facts. For instance, I didn't know about the escalator system in Hong Kong, especially the bit about them only going downhill in the morning. (Kinda thought the whole point of escalators was to provide travel both ways.)

Central-Mid-Levels escalator and walkway system - Wikipedia

The escalators daily run downhill from 6:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. and uphill from 10:30am to midnight.

So, there's even a half-hour period where they don't even run at all? That's just wack!

In San Francisco the BART escalator directions adjust station-by-station: in some the never run, in others they always run in whichever direction you're not going.

That would be unusual on a real shoot - to not have control over the crowd in the background, I mean. In reality, most location shoots have police sawhorses surrounding the perimeter of the shot, and police and production staff keep the bystanders and passersby on the outside. Sometimes it's a greenscreen - often, a greenscreen is obvious because the background is simply too clear (real shots have foreground/background differences).

I did a few location shoots back when I was still acting, and only once did someone break the perimeter. We were in the middle of shooting the scene and we all heard a ruckus somewhere off near the perimeter, and the next thing we knew, some woman was barreling her way thru the scene. It was funny mainly because we did several takes of the same scene, and that's the take they ended up showing

Having done some background work in my past, I can tell you the worst mortal sin an extra can commit is to look straight into the camera. It's a huge no-no, and will get you placed in a dark corner for the rest of the shoot.

I did a whole day of background shooting on a TV movie many years ago, and had to dress as three different characters. When the movie finally aired, we had to freeze the video in each of my scenes to catch the one frame where the metal bit on my ponytail band glinted at the camera for a microsecond. That one frame of film became a running joke among my friends for years after - as my claim to fame

totally agree! i love that they shoot on location. gives the show so much edge and charm. can't wait to see what countries they've travelled for the new season

If you start sitting around the campfire, telling scary stories -- change our names!

It costs a fortune to constantly shot on location and a show must be highly profitable to justify that.

Toronto has always been a film location.
