Anyone here like Calder?

I just don't trust him - I haven't watched the Season 5 premiere yet, I'm about to but there is something very slimy about that guy - NEVER did like nor trust him at all...is he even back for Season 5? I'm sure he is, but I'm just sick of his "I know it all attitude" and walks around w/a chip on his shoulder.

I love him! I hated him before. I know he has some unfinished business and isn't exactly on the up-and-up and is too chummy with Joan. But I think he's not the bad guy. McQuade is. Speaking of which, the actor who plays Calder recently spoke at the university I worked for, about MLK Jr. He is very compelling and charismatic!

reply

I don't think he is so bad.

I agree. At first he was extremely unlikable because it was assumed that he was Henry's mole in the CIA. Once he trusted Annie and helped her and Auggie, I really started liking him. I understand that Joan is angry at him because she thinks he just took the job from her, but he did stick up for her in the meeting and he did ask about Joan getting her position back. I think he really does try to do what is right, but sometimes it just comes off as cocky. He's one of the few characters I like right now.

I agree. The only thing I would say is I believe that Joan still doesn't trust Calder. Even though he did her a big favor, maybe she thinks he has an agenda. We still don't know that he doesn't, but I still have come to enjoy Calder!

I can't say I blame her. She doesn't see the side of him that the viewers see. From her point of view, he came in and took her job and didn't fight for her to get it back. She didn't see him argue about the decision on her behalf. I do think he still has secrets. He can't be that great of a guy and work for the CIA. There's some hidden secret and his girlfriend seems to be that secret. I hope they don't end up making him the bad guy. I want to see him stick around. He reminds me of Season 1 Jai.

When is Jai going to be revealed as alive? Maybe Calder is involved in that!!!!!!

If Jason's pizza forensics are right, then yeah.

xen, I don't think Joan still doesn't trust Calder. He has proven himself again and again that he can be trusted, so I don't think it's that. I think she sees he's a lonely guy without a girlfriend, and that he can be vulnerable with this girl who is an escort. She somehow senses he has feelings for the girl, and knows it can only end badly, and that maybe he himself can come to harm or reveal secrets because of his weakness for the girl.

I like him, though I don't like him being Joan's boss. I like when Joan is the boss, or Arthur, or both. I guess it's because that's how it was in the beginning, but I do like Calder, and I also like the actor himself, Wil Harper. He seems to be a really nice guy in real life and I had really liked him in CSI NY.

I think at this point, she is willing to work with Calder and is starting to see he is not all bad. However, I still think she suspects all is not as it seems, just as she does with McQuaid and that annoying woman that is always coming onto Arthur. Right now, I would think that the only people who Joan trusts are Annie, Auggie, and her baby (the baby hasn't given her reason yet to suspect foul play, but it could happen next season. LOL). I am not even sure if she fully trusts Arthur. She loves him but I think she worries he is going to be played and will go off the rails (or between the sheets with someone).

I like Calder. I like his stylin', and his bounce. Most of all I like his straight-arrow integrity: everyone else has agendas -- he does too, but the one he puts at the top of his list is finding the "truth", or at least that's what he says. The others don't even have that one on their lists: Arthur's is Arthur, Joan's is Arthur, Annie's is finding-herself, Augie's is Annie, and so on -- Calder is an ambitious guy, yes, but his saying "truth" made me think he might not sacrifice that to his ambition, as Arthur does constantly & tangling himself & Joan up with that. Calder proved this in his dealing with Augie, and Henry, in 4. They're a fascinating bunch, but among them Calder is the "integrity" guy, and that to me is reassuring as I watch the rest of them all weaving their self-defeating webs. I guess he's going to have girlfriend troubles this time: OK, then, make him more & more human -- it's a good idea, don't want a Billy Budd, remember what happened to _him_ -- and the show _is_ called covert affairs.

I could be completely wrong, but I assumed from that scene of him with his "girlfriend" that she was an escort that he was seeing. He seemed uncomfortable knowing that she would be at the same place he was and made sure that she called him on a separate line. I think she also mentioned that she had a client who was invited to the event or something similar to that. I could be totally wrong, but that was what I picked up from it.

In Today's-DC I doubt an escort would get him into trouble -- unless she's been stealing secrets -- but someone's wife would. Maybe she's a senator, a very-married one? When the silver-hairdo guy said "clean up your mess" he may have meant that. Joan's "senator" had that problem.

Another Idea: maybe Joan's "senator" turns out to be McQuaid's source -- she'd make a great series villain & now it needs one -- maybe she went to McQuaid after Annie took out Henry? -- just a thought. If it's her the DCI must be a real patsy, unless they're another conspiring-couple -- which would diminish her so I hope not -- after Joan's hearing, and their little interview together, that senator can do "evil" all on her own, go down in her own flames. I hope it's her, working solo: The New Henry.

reply

Is that what her problem was? I've watched that episode over a few times because I recently rewatched the series in preparation for Season 5 and she always snatches the folder so quickly that I can only see a glimpse of the photos. Was it her husband that was cheating or was she cheating on her husband? Sorry for the questions, I just always wondered what was in the pictures that got her to step down and I couldn't see what they were.

It would be a nice surprise to see her come in as a villain, but I don't know if I want another Henry type character again.

I think I like the character but I'm not sold on the acting skills of hill Harper if that makes any sense

reply

I don't like the character - never have. The actor is okay, but just that - okay.

reply

I didn't like Calder at first, but like others have said, I really started to like his character as Season 4 went on.

They really need a character on the side of the "good guys" who's not batting for Team Annie. Originally that was Joan but that dissipated quickly. There needs to be someone Annie can't charm her way out of her constantly breaking protocol.

You can say what you think about Annie but she did what nobody had the "guts" to do and that is take out that piece of *beep* Henry!!!!

Now I'm ready for Jai to come back; his character is DEAD on Beauty and the Beast; so it would be so *beep* great if Jai was INDEED alive, I mean w/this show you NEVER know what they could pull. Annie had to go dark for awhile and "screwed the protocol" for good reason. I think she's paying the price w/the heart condition she has now and yes, I want someone there for her; I'm sure Joan wishes it could be her, but at least she has her ex-boyfriend as her handler and they are back as being very good friends (they both still love each other but know it would never work, so they accept it - it is what it is). I'm sure Annie will get a new love interest down the line, and I hope he's a good guy to her. I have my ideas of who that love interest maybe - but we shall see.
As for Calder - still have "mixed feelings" for him, yeah he helped Annie/Auggie, but there is a vibe I get about him that's not good; like he does certain things for his own agenda and sorry he's still a smartass w/attitude; guess we'll have to wait and see but after that white haired man telling him to "clean his act" up --there is so much more to Calder than we know.

billqs, I so agree with you here. Annie breaks a lot of protocol and she never gets reprimanded for it. In season 4 I wondered if Annie had a boss; she was going on missions and doing things on her own. I was beginning to wonder who paid her salary. And if she was often thought dead, did she still get a salary? lol. And how DID she get paid?

In the last ep, she suggested going back to the same guy who she had drugged in the earlier episode. Auggie thought it was a bad idea, but Joan went along with it. Auggie was right and she almost got killed. The man she had drugged had almost gotten killed to. I'm glad he didn't although he was shot; it would have been another life needlessly lost because of Annie's recklessness. She seems to think she's invincible and that annoys me when she goes into some very daring situations alone, like she feels no one can take her down.

Even if he's on Annie's side, his demeanor makes him annoying and unlikeable. Wasn't there a guy like that in "Burn Notice" (seemed like a bad guy but was actually helping Michael?).

Or maybe he is the one using her. She may have one or more clients that he needs info from. That would be a better twist than the cliche of him being in love with someone who will cause trouble for him.
