It's barely even a comedy, the writing is so great, the characters are fleshed out, there's a bluntness to the realism of the story arcs, and the humour is incredible. This is television!

shareI agree. If you watch it as a comedy expecting big laughs you will be disapointed. Some scenes are pretty grim. The episode where the jock threatens to beat Louie up unless Louie asks him to please not too. Humiliating him in front of his date. Louie then follows the jock home and confronts his parents. That was just dark. I am half way through season 2. Each episode is nice and short. Some episodes are just out and out weird.
As a comedy I think 'Curb you Enthusiasm' and 'Seinfeld' are much better shows. However 'Louie' is a different animal. It gets my vote for being different and holding no punches and that makes me want to watch it.
I didn't really enjoy Season 1 and gave up on the show.
I then came back to it a few years later and found Seasons 2-4 to be really enjoyable (I haven't watched Season 5 yet).
I felt that the show really hit its stride midway through Season 2.
It's very very good, the realest and most romantic tv show.
