Is it ever explained why he has white kids and a black wife?

Is it ever explained? I know there's an episode where his on off girlfriend touches on the fact that their mom is a completely different colour, but... Ive not really seen any context to it at any point otherwise. Help would be appreciated! Thanks!

Yeah it's been mentioned many times. The most important thing is, simply, Louie doesn't care. He cast the actress as his wife because he thought she was good, he cast the actresses for his daughters the same way. (That was his explanation, basically)

It's the same reason his "sister" has been played by 3-5 different actresses, or how his brother was a frequent guest star early on, completely disappears, and then showed up last season with little fanfare.

Louie views each episode/scene is a short story and he casts whoever he thinks can deliver the lines best.

Also, the scene where Pamela brings it up was kind of a shout out to the question itself, which came up a lot back when their mother made her first appearance on the show.

Did pam make a comment about it this last epi? What was it

reply

No it was last season after she met Louie's wife. She basically said, "What the hell you have the two whitest kids ever and your wife is an African goddess." Something along those lines, and Louie doesn't really give an answer

reply

Yes he does, he says his ex-wife's mom is white. And obviously Louie is pretty pasty, so it's not that weird.

reply

Oh yes you're right, and I didn't even feel like getting into the genetics discussion, which has sprung up on these boards more than a few times

reply

But he's actually Mexican. Pastiest Mexican I've ever seen.

reply

He says his dad was Mexican, his mother was American (could have been any race).

Genetically it is possible though, for a very fair skinned person, and a darker skinned person to have fair skinned children. Just like two brown-eyed people can have kids with blue eyes. It's that Mendel's Peas thing from middle school biology.

"Arguing with idiots is like trying to play chess with a pigeon..."

Yeah, his dad can be Mexican and white at the same time... there are black Mexicans (Africans who were slaves there or escaped there) just like a Canadian be black or Asian. I don't know what the situation is here since I haven't bothered to research his dad, but he simply could've been a Spanish, Irish, or whatever dude whose people moved to Mexico rather than America (which wouldn't change their race).

His wife being black is a bit weird. My girlfriend came over as I was watching an episode and she asked if the kids were adopted. I've read that this actress did the best, but if that's the case then those other women must've sucked - the character would be annoying either way, but the actress isn't helping. I'm guessing the hotel flashback was real and that was his wife, but she was white during the flashback - either way, it seems a bit convoluted, but not a big deal.

I never saved anything for the swim back.

Great answer

Fair enough. She is, as you've said, a fantastic actress. Anyway, thanks for the answer.

And there is the episode when Steven Wright suggests to Louie that he hang around after his set to try to get laid...Louie does and meets a woman who takes him home to show him her p***y, and when they arrive at her home, her husband is there and eager to participate (played by F Murray Abraham)...and then a couple episodes later, we meet Louie's uncle, played by the same actor who played the woman's husband (F Murray Abraham)...and then a couple episodes later, and we see a flashback to Louie and his father interacting--once again, the same actor who played his uncle and the woman's husband (F Murray Abraham!)! Clearly, continuity is not important here.

Actually, I always thought it was a tongue in cheek play on the original lyrics of the show's theme song - Stories original version "Brother Louie". It tells the story of miscegenation/interracial love frowned upon by Louie's parents - chorus omitted for brevity - :

She was black as the night (OK - so clearly he cheated here, but...)
Louie was whiter than white
Danger, danger when you taste brown sugar
Louie fell in love overnight

Nothing bad, it was good
Louie had the best girl he could
When he took her home
To meet his mama and papa
Louie knew just where he stood

There he stood in the night
Knowing what's wrong from what's right
He took her home to meet his mama and papa
Man, he had a terrible fright

Louie nearly caused a scene
Wishin' it was a dream
Ain't no diff'rence if you're black or white (EMPHASIS HERE)
Brothers, you know what I mean

Why does it need explaining?
