I know I'm on shakey ground... Can someone correct me... 10/29/15

I know there have been fires in space (Apollo)

that said this question was asked during an episode of PS

Fender Bender 10/29/15

What would happen if you tried to fire a gun in space?

A. It would function normally
B. It would explode
C. The bullet wouldn't fire

Answer: A. It would function normally - gravity has nothing to do with the mechanical functioning of a gun

My question is: Doesn't fire in space and the firing of a gun require oxygen?

There are chemical reactions that don't require oxygen, such as the explosive used in bullets. The answer was poorly stated. The lack of gravity would mean that the bullet wouldn't behave as it would on earth, it would keep traveling forever until it encountered a gravitational or magnetic field.

Thanks for the reply...

The process does require oxygen, but it is contained in the constituent ingredients in smokeless powder. A modern firearm wouldn't work if it relied solely on atmospheric oxygen, as it couldn't get it quickly enough to obtain the proper combustion rate to fire the projectile.
