Most ridiculous seller.....

Who's you're most ridiculous/memorable sellers? Some of the sellers, actually, most of them, seem quite... bonkers.

For some reason I found myself, out of the blue, thinking about this one particular guy. Walks in with two huge punching bags, drops them on the floor. Claims they were Rocky Marciano's, the legendary boxer. Authentication document? Affidavits. From the guy who sold them to him! Who apparently crossed his hearts and swore die. Oh, and pictures of Rocky Marciano, punching a bag.

Guy wanted a cool 370 000.00 dollars!! From a pawn shop.

Man, that made my day.

Anyone who is told their item is a fake, forgery, or counterfeit and then in the brief after-interview says they're going to get a second opinion because they still think it might be real. Anybody who asks a fantastical amount for their item.

Guy wants 400,000 for Hank Williams's amplifier. Even if it was genuine, it's just a pure fantasy it would be worth that much.

Last time the wife and me were bored enough to watch Pawn Stars we saw the Maciano bag guy and she laughed and said "who in their right mind would pay that for that, even if it is real?" I had to agree...it's a nasty old bag(s)....I mean u less Jesus threw some uppercuts on them, they're just old gym punching bags...even if they were Ali's I just can't imagine anyone paying $370k...and proving they are real, well anyone can get a printer and get a sworn affidavit. I know notaries also...they'll stamp anything for $10.

Yeah. I mean, not many people alive today care about Marciano anyway. A point I've noticed Rick make many times, some artifact's value depends on the emotional attachment of the people of that relevant era. And if they're generally not around anymore, well....

Also how does he arrive at that ridiculous valuation?

reply

The old guy selling guns who always picks on Craig -- sometimes when he's not even there.

The kid who wanted $500,000 for a piece of heat shielding from an Apollo spacecraft.

And the guy who got furious when Rick wouldn't buy his sculpture...the one where Antwan was about to step in and Rick said "I've got this."

reply

I'm not really "old" but I know Rocky Marciano but you're right...how many people are hardcore Maciano fans that have that kind of money? Maybe a few here and there but a museum would be a better bet but even then, point being $370k for an old punching bag? Heck, a museum could make a nice replica ( as a lot of museums do). I just remember thinking who would want that? And I'm thinking about people with money also...usually people with money aren't stupid (well most the time) and that is not a good investment. Although I realize this for many wouldn't be an investment but I think u get what I'm saying....good look! And of course, he acted like people would be fighting over it if they don't buy it...uh, most people don't know who Marciano even is man, except for the seller, and he was just wishing upon a star....

And even if it had all the pics of the bag that sure as heck LOOK like it, he has a notarized COA....would you still buy it with 100% confidence that it is the actual bag in the pics and used by Marciano, etc..? I'd always have a lil doubt in back of my head because honestly there's no way to prove with complete certainty it is legit...

I like all the people who say, I'm asking x amount of dollars, but I won't take less than y amount, and yet they take less than half of y.

It's not the size of the dog in the fight, it's the size of the fight in the dog

I know most if not all of it's fake but you have to admire anyone dumb enough to be told something is worth $2500 at a pawn shop and still ask $10,000 for it. Seriously, if you walk in without thought to being reasonable don't even bother. Better yet, stay inside your home; you're obviously too stupid to function in normal society.

The most ridiculous seller I saw was on a YouTube clip of Pawn Stars, I didn't see it on TV and that was a guy asking for $500K for a potato that was thrown at Martin Luther King at a protest. The potato was in very good shape considering it was 50 years ago. So basically the guy wanted $500K for a potato he likely picked up on the way to the pawn shop.

I don't ever recall seeing this, so I looked and here it is
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3QkC2PA0YAo It is my belief that it is a gag that never aired.

You're right, I think this was a gag reel between friends. Sean Price was a rapper who performed at the Beauty Bar (of all places) on March 17, 2013. The video was uploaded on June 27, 2013.

Since Russell runs in DJ circles, he probably met up with Price during his gig in Vegas and they thought it would be funny to film a parody video. Price even mentions he's "out here doin' a show" and "its March, after Black History Month". Likely, Russell asked Harrison if it would be OK for them to film the video and he gave his permission.

Seems like the guy (Guy Blelloch) who shot this video is a Video Director for Duck Down and makes music videos as well as "comedy" videos featuring Duck Down artists.

Sean Price died in August 2015.

LOL did you see the comment, "If there was an Irishman in the shop they could have asked him if it was legit"? Haha, that was gold.

Two of the worst:

Some idiot brings in a car that he claims is worth at least 50k. But once Rick has it checked out and finds it's a complete lemon, the guy is willing to let it go for $1500. Rick wisely walked away while the seller goes ballistic.

Another idiot brings in a guitar with the pickguard signed by some celebrity and naturally wants thousands of dollars. Rick has it checked out and finds the guitar itself is a cheap piece of crap that isn't original to the pickguard. Again, Rick walks away while the seller throws a hissy-fit.

reply

Looks like he bought the guitar because in some episodes I see a black and white guitar hanging on the wall.

These are two of my favorites. The car was a limited edition 10th anniversary Datsun 280ZX. The owner was a screwball who said the car ran like a clock. The car was a mess. I laughed when the owner went from wanting something like 30k for it to quickly agreeing to 4k, but after a test drive Rick rescinded his offer and the goofball owner was really upset.

The guitar's pickguard was signed by Chuck Berry. I learned something here--that sometimes a celebrity will just sign pickguards, and then they get attached to very cheap guitars, which are then sold for an inflated price. They seller's reaction was priceless--he couldn't accept that he had been taken. Some people just have to cling to the idea that they have something valuable.

If you care to read the "frequently asked questions" section of this show's IMBd site, you'd realize the pawn/sellers are carefully prescreened, not real time walk-in customers. The show has plenty of time to research the details and purported authenticity of the object and the entertainment value of both the object and the seller. Rick doesn't just "happen" to have or lack an experts knowledge of the item. The "experts" they call in aren't just random friends, they are selected for their "screen appeal" and desire to publicize their own services. The "experts" also have plenty of time to research the topic before taping and are doubtlessly there throughout the taping - not "let me give a buddy of mine a call and get him/her down here - look around and buy something while we wait".

Marciano is soooo overrated!!!!!

Guy with the "pirate ship" or whatever it was that he drove down the street. The one that Chum went to look at. I think he wanted $100,000 for it. Chum wasn't allowed to buy it and the guy went berserk. Idiot.
