This is going to tank at the box office
Seriously, who's the genius that thought that opening the same day as Iron Man 3 would be a good idea?
shareSeriously, who's the genius that thought that opening the same day as Iron Man 3 would be a good idea?
shareAnd on top of that, it is a very mediocre film, at best. BYE BYE ICEMAN...
So should no other movies open when a big budget movie opens? It had a budget of $20 mil, so it doesn't need a big open. If it makes $35 mil total, it's a huge success. And believe it or not, people will see movies other than IM3.
shareI don't doubt this will bomb. Is it even being released wide? But other films will make some money this weekend too. Plenty of people are going to show up to sold out theaters and have to choose something else.
shareWhen a movie like Iron Man 3 opens, basically yeah don't open it that week. The film isn't going to open with 35 million. The Next three days came out the same weekend as Harry Potter and only made 21 million in the states (on a 30 million budget). Savages tanked against Amazing Spider-man. Did you hear about the morgans tanked against Avatar. I could list these all days.
There are rare exceptions. Friends with Benefits still did decent at the box office despite opening the same day as Captain America. But let's face it, Michael Shannon doesn't have the box office power Justin Timberlake and Mila Kunis has. He's a phenomenal actor, no doubt. But he doesn't have the star power to hold his own against a super hero blockbuster. I hope I'm wrong. I really hope this film is an exception to the rule, but I doubt it. If the film came out a week earlier (during the April 26-28 weekend, Pain and Gain was #1 at the box office with 20 million), then I think the film's chances of box office success would be much better.
Coming out this fall would probably have been best from a box office point of view.,
shareYou're right, it will tank. Americans don't want to see a realistic, gut wrenching movie like this. They'd rather see superhero movies, fart joke comedies, and big budget out of body 3D spectacles.
The Iceman is a return to the style of early Scorsese, DePalma, or Oliver Stone.
Those who appreciate NOT being hit over the head with thunderous F/X, a loud soundtrack, and appreciate good storytelling, editing not for those with low attention spans, and great acting, will seek this out. There are not many of us left in the U.S., but we do exist.
Totally agree with Katz5.
I saw this over the weekend and I just kept thinking of how much more I prefer movies like The Iceman over the glitzy hollywood CGI-filled movies like Star Trek, which EVERYBODY at the theater seemed to be going to see that day.
Not that people shouldn't enjoy a movie like Star Trek, but it's a a real shame that so many people ignore movies like The Iceman over movies like that. The average movie-goer simply doesn't have the attention-span to appreciate how talented a actor like Michael Shannon is unless he's in a movie battling CGI robots with laser guns as he's dodging explosions all around him.
its #13 at the box office at the moment, not bad considering its limited release, and it is expanding, with the international release set for June 7th and there is already promotion for it over here ( i live in Europe) i don't think it will do that bad :)
share>>>>>not bad considering its limited release<<<<<
Yes, a very limited release. I just saw it for $10US (cheap!) at an art house type theater that only shows foreign language films, indies and operas on film.
In it's first week it only grossed just over a quarter million dollars in America. That's NOT good. I doubt international sales are going to help it much. They have to make back a $10 million budget. That'll be like 15 years of video sales and rentals.
In it's first week of release it was literally in about 5 theaters? what did you expect, in its 3rd week it opened in 160 more theaters and has already jumped 17 places on the box office.. and will probably expand more in the USA, and hasn't been released in any other country yet.. but maybe your right, hopefully it makes back its 10 million
shareIMDB updated the gross figures since I last posted. As of May 17 it made $760K. Still has quite a bit to go. Plus someone else posted that the true budget of the film is not 10mil as posted, but 20mil.
I wish it well. Maybe it'll open the door for more non-formulatic(sp?) movies, like what used to come out back in the 60's and 70's. Seems like the only movies that get any attention these days are huge budgeted franchise movies, star driven rom-coms, or snarky comedies like Hangover or Will ferrel vehicles.
Confessions of a Dangerous Mind, Auto Focus, Flash of Genieus. All great indie dramas that I bet you never heard of. They got little to no attention.
did this film flop?

Well said!
So what? It's a better movie than most, probably all, of the mega movies that came out so far.
I'm feeling rough, I'm feeling raw, I'm in the prime of my life.
I'm not saying it's a bad movie, but getting a good box office is how the actors and directors keep working and I want them to be able to keep working. Gigli was a huge box office bomb. Director Martin Brest, once an acclaimed director, basically vanished. Shannon will be ok. He still has Boardwalk Empire. But director Ariel Vromen? I don't think we'll be seeing him anytime soon, unfortunately.
shareWhile it's a return to a certain gritty hard-edged style, the film is absolutely unpleasant from beginning to end. De Palma and Scorsese knew how to hook the viewer and have you want to revisit their films afterwards - but I can confidently say I will never see this film again. I don't mind hyper violent, realistic films, but I need a character that's worth watching (Scarface and Carlito's Way come to mind). This guy had nothing going for him. I think if played by Gandolfini as someone else suggested, it would have gone a long way to helping the audience find some empathy with this stone killer. But there's something so creepy about Michael Shannon on a good day that he is never able to make that connection with the audience that this type of film requires.

Saw this film today---I don't remember it playing in any mainstream theaters or ANY theaters around me, for that matter. It hardly got any promotion either. I mainly wanted to see this because of Michael Shannon---he was good in this little unknown, thoughtful indie film noir flick called THE MISSING PERSON (worth seeing) and he basically just about stole the show as the main villain in the pretty good PREMIUM RUSH. So since I love gangster films, I was looking forward to seeing him play a ruthless thug, because he's got the perfect looks for it, and he didn't disappoint. Frankly, it takes some real acting craft to make anyone feel anything for a stone cold-blooded killer, and Shannon did that while showing how Kulinski (the Iceman) managed to keep the two separate parts of his life apart, and how they ended up colliding on a collision course with each other toward the end. I just wish the film had gone more into the Iceman's abusive childhood, since it's clear that had an affect on who he became, but the film barely delves into that more than 5 or 10 min like when his brother was talking about how they both survived their father's beatings.
All in all, THE ICEMAN was a pretty good film, and I'll give it credit for managing to not come off at all as a tired retread of a hundred other gangster films I've seen before (like KILL THE IRISHMAN) and it looks like the director d tried to give it that dark '70's film noir look, feel, and tone ( it was a decent match for the subject matter anyway.) All in all, if you like well-made no-holds barred dark period gangster films, this one's isn't bad----I will warn people that it is EXTREMELY violent,though---I had to close my eyes at a bunch of scenes.
