If you haven't seen the tapes then this movie makes no sense

I have seen the tapes, so I knew what was going on in the movie.

I tried to imagine a person who hasn't seen the tapes watching this movie and I think they would be totally lost at times. And that's a serious problem. Not a very good film I'm afraid.

Now to read the book I guess...

What do you mean? Although it definitely seemed pressed for time the story is easy to follow. How in depth do you have to go for a hitman hiding his idenity from his wife? Aside from that there is only a hitman making hits to support his family.

Yeah, I have to agree - I've seen the Tapes a few times & I realized after reading several posts here (most of which hated the movie - I didn't hate it, but as great as Shannon and Liotta were, it could've been so much better) that I could fill in a lot of blanks from the Tapes. Without them I wouldn't have understood why Shannon played Kuklinski the way he did, or the dynamic between him and...practically every other character, really. And the James Franco scene is actually quite chilling if you've heard the story from Kuklinski's mouth, while on its own it doesn't carry any weight.

A shame, and a waste of a great cast.

As I watched this I wondered that too. I think the real stories are so chilling that seeing them acted out make them less so. I did enjoy the movie on a whole.
