Why does the pony tail man get shot by his friend Ray Liotta?

shareEarlier in the movie his friend killed two other gangsters (hispanics? can't remember) and ripped them off on a drug deal. He kept the drugs and the money.
It turned out they were connected to somebody important and they knew what happened. If Liotta didn't turn over his friend or kill him, he'd have been killed himself for representing him.
Which in real life is of course what happened eventually anyway for a different reason. The character Liotta was based on was killed by other gangsters, as the profession goes.
