I’ll try, but I do not think I can provide too much additional insight as this film is, frankly, not as good as their other ones. That being said, it’s not like there is anything bad about that; You do not need to hit a home run every time you step up to plate. I do not think there is anything particularly wrong with the film either. I just found it boring and somewhat annoying.
We can start by getting out of the way what the film is not and what it is. It is not a supernatural mystery. The supernatural element in this film is, in my opinion, just a metaphor. It is supposed to represent social wants/ needs and how they can pull even the most seemingly incompatible people together. This ‘gravity’ was represented in the quartz ashtray that initially brought Levi and John together.
As the two spent more time together they began to feel that there was something special or unique about their relationship. Levi recognized something special was going on, but was hesitant towards forming a close bond with someone he didn’t know. John, on the other hand, embraced it. No matter how far into the film you go, the sole thing that links these two people is that they think they share something special.
I won’t go into detail recalling the scenes and what was said through the film. I will say that I think John fabricated the ‘special’ gravitational force between them, and fed of Levi’s interest and engagement with it. He controlled, manipulated and lied in order to make that connection between them seem more than it was. Levi was influenced by all of this and it is what kept him from moving on with his life.
In the end, this was a film about showing a relationship blossom, deepen, deteriorate and eventually die. It was an unhealthy relationship plagued with all of the modern methods of psychological control we see/hear of nowadays.
The above being said, this movie was long and boring. The stuff I wrote above may be something I imagined while watching it.
