Are they really supposed to be old?

It's very clear in the film that the main characters are wearing old person masks, and they make no effort to move or sound like old people, yet the synopsis describes the characters as being elderly. My thinking is that instead of being old, their thing is just wearing those masks 24/7, and that certainly be no odder than the other style choices of the people they loosely associate themselves with throughout the film.

I have no idea. I think they're young people pretending to be old, because old people don't have enough energy to dance on busted boomboxes and hump garbage cans all day. If they're young and want to pretend to be old people, that makes things even creepier.

Yeah, this makes a lot more sense. They're supposed to belong to a "loser-freak collective", and it's definitely true that the sort of people they hang around with in the movie either look bizarre or broken down. So maybe wearing old-person masks is just their 'thing'.
