Why is Stephen Frears so amazing?

The fact one man can direct both the Queen and High Fidelity is answer enough.

So true! Love 'My Beautiful Laundrette' too. However the less said about 'The Grifters' the better.

I liked The Grifters. Any film that involves Angelica Houston getting the crap beaten out of her is all right by me.

I'm ****ing Irish. I'll deal with something being wrong for the rest of my life.

....and now comic books.

Agreed!

Lets not forget My Beautiful Laundrette and I really enjoyed The Snapper! All the reviews for Tamara Drewe look great too...

His master piece IMO will always be "Dangerous Liaisons". Here in France, the book by Choderlos de Laclos is a beloved classic, and the movie took it to another level: GENIUS :)

Stephen Frears is indeed a wonderful director. "Hero" (or "Accidental Hero" in some countries), with Dustin Hoffman and Andy Garcia, is an underrated Capra-esque gem. Seek it out if you haven't seen it!

I think SF is a good director with a very uneven filmography. I've enjoyed Dangerous Liaisons" and High Fidelity.

I was so much older then, I'm younger than that now.
