I usually watch movies without doing too much digging on who wrote them or why. But as I was watching this movie I got the distinct impression that it was.. inspired by "Twilight."
Is this the case? It just reeks of all the usual love triangles and dramatic little mystery plays. Frankly I found that aspect of the film annoying as hell.
The only good part of the movie is the beautiful Valerie and of course the awesome Gary Oldman, who lends a touch of dignity and insanity to any part he plays.
I'm going to reply to my own post. I wrote the above about halfway through the film. (I really shouldn't do that, I should watch the full feature first)
After finishing the movie I wanted to point out that the ridiculous overly dramatic "tragic love" scenario reaches a peak and overkills itself.
What IS it with all these damn vampire and werewolf glorifiers? This monster worship gets old to me.
Came a little late in on this one and the only reason I did was because I was on The White Queen board and decided to look up Max Irons (who played a pretty forgetable Henry in this movie).
I had noticed the similarities also. The shots of the mountains, the woods, the misty, gray tone...and those are just SOME of the scenery.
Similarities in the hair cuts with the guys
The fact that they cast Bella's father as Valerie's father
The love triangle
To me it was just for the twilighters
Thank goodness there weren't any sparkling wolves
It's not just a spoke in my menstrual cycle, I am normally this way.
Catherine Hardwicke, who directed Twilight, directed RRH, so that probably explains the similarities with the footage and why it visually has a similar feel to Twilight. It might also explain the casting of Billy Burke because often directors have actors they work well with, and they go to them repeatedly. For example, James Cameron worked a lot with Bill Paxton and Michael Biehn. And I believe one of the sparkly vampire girls in Twilight was cast because she had previously worked with Hardwicke.
A love triangle is NOT like Twilight, however. Love triangles have been around forever.
The haircuts on the guys are just popular haircuts. They're similar to boy bands and a lot of actors. I don't think that's "like" Twilight either - it's a shared trait because actors in these types of YA films are going to have popular haircuts (they're not going to have mullets).
