It was very incoherent and just did not make ANY sense. Sensationally it was nice looking and nice sounding and stuff, but if you apply ANY thinking to it, it all just was 100% confusing for the first 2/3 then last 1/3 is just like... wut. Does not make sense.
First of all I agree with you about visuals and sound. On a surface level, the movie was appealing. But on a less surface level, if you apply thinking and ask any questions, it gets ridiculously dumb and/or confusing. A first-time viewer is going to have significant problems understanding any of the first 1/2 - 2/3. And even at the end when it's allegedly all revealed, it still doesn't really make too much sense. The "super powerful alien robot consciousness" is never gone into any detail. Why would in 2017 NASA be sending people to Jupiter already? We are currently expecting people to get to MARS by 2030???? And why did the Alien Robot Device need Earth's water so badly anyway? WHy would it take it so much freaking time to drain it? Why did it feel a need to shoot the Moon? Why would it rely on cloned humans? Etc etc etc. Just so many details that were clearly set up purely to drive drama of the movie but from a broader "FIctional World Building" perspective do NOT add up at all...
Just watched this the other day on HBO and I have to agree with abnormally normal. The movie was visually well-done. However, the plot does not make a lot of sense when you start to scrutinize it. It is followable and understandable, but not very believable.
A lot of speculation and ignoring of common sense is required to make it hold together. The alien computer spaceship thing may have a valid reason for using such a convoluted and energy-wasting plan of using human clones to do its dirty work, but this reason is not explained in the movie. The technology the Alien is capable of making and running seems incredibly advanced and like it would not need humans at all to repair/build such machines.
It seems like someone in Hollywood said to a group of script-writers, "OK, we have money for a big budget sci-fi movie that must include the following: A post-apocalyptic setting, evil alien technology, cool futuristic toys, a band of surviving humans, a surprise clone situation, a big reveal at the end, two hot female leads, and Tom Cruise. Also it would be great if there were as many Tom Cruises as possible in the film. People love Tom Cruise. And the females must unquestionably be in love with the Tom Cruise character. It doesn't have to be too believable, but needs to have enough twists and curveballs to keep the audience from paying too much attention to the plot. Now write a script. If we can churn a script out within a week, Morgan Freeman can work a cameo into his schedule! First one done wins!"

Exactly. At some point in this stupid, apology-addicted, politically corrected society, MOVIES stopped be fun, and must be perfect. It's just some great entertainment, and very simple to follow when one engages the brain. It was nice to have the brain engaged for once instead of just smiling at the pretty, flashy colors.
I just watched this movie on the couch and followed it easily, even whilst on my phone on the tinternet for the last half hour... My question about it is why have the clones... TET made the drones and the water fusion reactors... Why use clones to repair them when it had the tech to make them in the first place, surely it had the tech to fix them. It is said it went from planet to planet obtaining resources (energy)... what happens when it does all this to a planet that has no intelligent life to manipulate into fixing its machines?

That's always confused me too.
The fusion reactors; the sky towers and all the other items had to be built/created SOMEHOW. Were they built by the mindless clones, modified drones or something else that wasn't revealed in the film?
-------- The movie has a plot hole?!? EVERY FRIGGIN' MOVIE HAS A FRIGGIN' PLOT HOLE!!!!!

you just have to let go and accept things as they are 'told' to you ... using 'logic' there wouldn't be a movie - the TET would have just killed everyone and sucked/converted all the water and moved on.
In many ways the clones can do things more efficiently than the robots. Like when Jack used bubble gum to get a damaged drone back up and operational. Also, the clones were probably good at luring other humans out of hiding.
And the clones could think and operate independently - when the TET didn't have LOS it's control and support and defense of operations was limited.
Oblivion is similar to The Matrix. Jack is like Neo, and Julia is like Trinity. Jack was the 'one' who saved the world like Neo. Julia is the love that inspired Jack. At the end of the movie, the Jack clone searched for Julia until he found her. The Morgan Freeman character was like the undercover people of Zion that were introduced in The Matrix sequels. Some movies, like Oblivion, is not meant to be taken literally.
