Kowalski Is Wrong Again

The most redeeming quality of this film is that it’s already locked up the Oscar for Best Editing by nearly making Jonah Hill look good at basketball.

An extremely cringeworthy shot at a topical, edgy comedy that forgets it has to actually be funny instead of solely sanctimonious, You People features Jonah Hill going against type and trying to play the “grounded”, woke, morally upstanding protagonist in what might be his official peak of self-obsession, which is already a high bar. Remember when he used to just draw giant dicks or when he said he’d release his mentally challenged incest children into the wild? Man, those were the days. The funny part is that Hill already made a better version of this movie with Ice Cube in 22 Jump Street.

Outside of having the blandest romcom framework possible, with 90% of the jokes being just casual riffing (which is admittedly funny at times) and including far too many very specific pop culture references, it’s biggest crime is convincing Eddie Murphy to phone in an abysmally wooden performance when he very well could have been the redeeming factor. Even despite the help of great character actors like Mike Epps, Matt Walsh, or Deon Cole, the film spends the majority of the runtime preaching at the audience things that populate the Twitter accounts of every upper class white person on the planet instead of just, y’know, BEING FUNNY. Or at the very least, contributing something new to the conversation! A fucking A.I. that existed during the last election cycle could’ve generated this movie.

Credit where credit is due, a few parts got great laughs out of me, especially things like Hill trying to psychoanalyze Ni**as in Paris or the suggestion of a Tron-themed wedding or David Duchovny’s (yes, he accepted a paycheck for this too) obsession with Xzibit. Nothing, though, can redeem the 2 hours of Hill screaming through the screen “guys I’m not racist!!!”

Fuck this movie. Why, Eddie? Why??

P.S. If a strange man jumps into my car in the middle of LA, claims he just “thought it was an Uber”, then proceeds to STAY IN THE CAR joking about how sorry he is and how funny the situation is despite me SCREAMING at him to get out, you best believe I’m taking the keys and booking it outta there. Instead, this serves as our “meet cute”.

No, Kowalski is always right.

Lets agree to disagree brother :-D

Agreed!

A fair review. I kind of liked Murphy's performance in this. I liked the disastrous dinner with Murphy and Elaine from Seinfeld having a 'victim-off' over who gets to claim biggest victimhood (while they're all enjoying a nice dinner in a nice house in one of the most expensive cities in the most affluent country in the world...). The scene with the constant Drake references was beyond annoying. One of the great tragedies of our time is the seeming acceptance of mediocrity. This is a comedy that aims squarely for mediocrity and often fails to hit even this easiest of targets.

reply

Julia Louis-Dreyfus is an heir to a billion-dollar fortune. What the hell is her 'victimhood'?

reply

Is that a serious question, or did you just not think it through? Have you seen the movie? The black family and the Jewish family have a victim-off. What the hell does the actress's real life have to do with it?

Think. It ain't illegal yet.

reply

Yes, I understood it was Julia's character, but Julia is Jewish in real-life. Is this multi-billion-dollar heir also a 'victim' in real-life on account of her part-Jewish heritage? Does anyone else find it rather distasteful to have a billion-dollar heir playing a character taking part in a 'victim-off'? Heck, does anyone else find the entire concept of a 'victim-off' remotely distasteful (and, suffice to say, not especially funny)?

I suppose *everybody* is a victim now, including even a royal prince... *sigh*

To paraphrase The Incredibles "If everyone is a victim, no one is a victim."

reply

VICTIM OFF?...NO...THAT IS NOT THE MOVIE AT ALL...PERHAPS WATCH IT?

reply

"Have you seen the movie? The black family and the Jewish family have a victim-off."

Don't tell me. Tell SandyR. They're the one who's arguing that there is a 'victim-off'.

Also, as big an Eddie Murphy fan as I am, and as much as I generally like David Duchovny and Julia Louis-Dreyfus, the word on this film doesn't strike me as very positive. Like a lot of modern 'comedies' I get the impression that this is more turgid, improv-heavy, pop-culture-referencing, solipsistic, pandering nonsense. Judd Apatow has a lot to answer for...

reply

Seriously?

You mean, like sex-offender, James Franco, and, according to Charlyne Yi, his accomplice/enabler, Seth Rogen?

Or do you mean the blatant sexism of films like Knocked Up, or the homophobia of films like The 40-Year-Old-Virgin?

I don't know you, or this site, very well Kowalski, so I can only logically assume that you're a big-time conservative, possibly a massive MAGA/Trump fan, in view of your problemtic attitudes/beliefs. Am I close to the mark? Heck, why do I need to ask? It's CLEARLY written all over your posts here.

Anyway, you do you. I suppose you're entitled to your staunchly right-wing views, even if I personally can't condone the sexism and homphobia you're enabling. And I'll do me. Take care. :)

WHOA,DICKHEAD...TAKE YOUR POLITICS TO THE SEPTIC TANK WHERE THEY BELONG...NOT HERE...YOUR ASSUMPTION ABOUT ME IS THE EXACT OPPOSITE OF WHAT MOST HERE SAY ABOUT ME...IN SHORT...YOU ARE AN IDIOT.😘

reply

No need for the rudeness Kowalski. I didn't say anything nasty to you. I only made an honest observation based on your tastes, which you're, of course, entitled to, however much I, as a staunch and genuine progressive leftist may disagree. :)

Hey, I even said 'Take care', which clearly indicates the upmost good faith on my part, so, with all due respect, I don't quite understand the hostility you are now displaying. Is is because of my opposition to misogyny, homophobia and right-wing politics in general? I'm sorry if my politics offend you, but can't we all get along?

These are 2 exceptionally well-written posts. Thank goodness you have managed to stick it out at MovieChat, home of those who failed the GED. The prose that both of you write is literate and flowing. Sandy, are you familiar with Kurt Vonnegut’s short story, “Harrison Bergeron”? He believed that in the future (now) superlative people would be artificially handicapped to keep us mediocre. I have worked in ultra high-end luxury sales. There are people who won’t buy things not because they cannot afford them, but because they don’t think that they deserve to have them. Our celebrity-worshiping culture promotes the myth that only The Rock deserves to have certain things. The rest of us should be happy with Netflix and McDonald’s.

The heroes we should be worshipping are ourselves.

Keep fighting the good fight, you two.

reply

It reads to me that we are living in the opposite society to 'Harrison Bergeron' (a story I know very well as a Vonnegut fan), in that we do have an elite, and we are deferential to that elite, believing they, and only they, *deserve* to have nice things in contrast to the rest of us 'mediocrities'.

Sir Michael Young's 'The Rise of the Meritocracy' is an interesting counterpoint to 'Harrison Bergeron', as it questions whether a society build around meritocracy is in fact a good thing, or in fact as toxic as the semi-feudal one that has existed pretty much since the dawn of mankind.

This is a great review. It summed up almost all of my exact thoughts.

This movie was better when it was Simon Baker and Sanaa Lathan in Something New.
