Pleasantly surprised, not so worried about Ghostbusters now
I don't know why people have such a problem with this movie. Most of the criticisms I've heard of it just aren't true.
Melissa McCarthy does a fantastic job with that character, she doesn't just fart and fall over all the time which is the main thing I'd heard about the film. That her being fat was "the joke". There's one fart joke (when they go to the bridal dress place) that is pretty bad, and she sh*ts in the sink (but Lillian *beep* in the street, so she's not even the only one to have fecal-based humour)... and that's pretty much it. The rest of the time she's just the outspoken tomboy who doesn't fit into the "pretty girl" dynamic of the rest of them. I loved a lot of her scenes but particularly her matter-of-fact admission that 9 dogs was probably too many. Her character isn't really fleshed out too much (what was all that about her being at the top level of clearance in the military?) but she's not the focus so she doesn't have to be.
There's no overt feminist message, in fact I'd say it's pretty anti-feminism in terms of the cliches it portrays about female relationships. It's not a "WOMYN ARE POWERFUL AND YOU CAN'T STOP US" film, it's the equal of a Hangover-type film about a group of male friends. These people are all damaged goods in some way. I thought it was great that ultimately Lillian, Annie and Helen were ALL in some way to blame for what was going on in the film - that there wasn't a "villain", so to speak.
So yeah - I watched it expecting to be really worried about Ghostbusters but I'm almost looking forward to it now.
