Luther in the age of Black Lives Matter

Obviously there are different issues in Britain, but I think it's harder to watch Luther now with all of the attention in the US to police brutality and overpolicing.

Luther is really an example of a terrible cop. He's this rampaging id who doesn't recognize a whole lot of limits to doing what he thinks is right. Luther is all about his intuitive sense of who the bad guys are and using extreme, sometimes illegal or unethical, means to catch and punish them. But that's exactly where we come in for problems, with cops who think that someone is a bad guy and feel no need to respect their rights.

Except for the HUGE difference that neither Loofer nor the other cops carry guns! So it is "Stop - or I'll say stop again." ;-)

reply

Yes, Luther doesn't routinely carry a gun, but he still regularly beats up suspects and ignores their rights.

Unless Alpert's covered in bacon grease, I don't think Hugo can track anything.

reply

Yes, he regularly beats up suspects and ignores their rights. However, he doesn't routinely empty two clips in the back of innocent black men, which is the basis of the Black Lives Matter campaign ;-) 'Lives' as in people dying, Loofer doesn't kill people ;-)

and that didn't happen in America / Ferguson either... pay attention to facts... don't listen to BS.

reply

Uh...yeah it did.

And Luther let a serial child murderer fall...he didn't shoot an unarmed innocent black man to death. There's a huge difference.

reply

The fact that he doesn't do the worst thing he could possibly do doesn't make his actions okay.

reply

Yes, and if Luther did carry a gun, he would have murdered like 15 people by now. The whole premise of show and the turning point in Luther's life is when he effectively attempted to murder Henry Madsen by intentionally letting him fall. The point of this thread is not lost. Luther has still assaulted many people, and has otherwise abused his authority as a cop many times on the show.

Nothing you have to say is anywhere near as useful or important as you think it is.

Thanks.

I thought it was Loofah? ;-)

Have you ever Sgt Voight on Chicago PD?

reply

Except Luther uses his method to catch really bad criminals. American police think black people are guilty of something even before they can prove it.

reply

It certainly seems as though being black (or brown) is a crime and often a capital crime in the USA. If you think that is a nonsensical statement, you should read about Sundown towns in America, some of which existed into the sixties.

Don't pretend like the UK is that much better. Remember after 7/7 when the British cops gunned down a Brazilian turnstile jumper on the metro because they thought he was an Arab? I'm sure that black and Asian Britons have a lot of complaints about unnecessary police scrutiny.

Unless Alpert's covered in bacon grease, I don't think Hugo can track anything.

reply

Oh, well if the cop thinks he's after a really bad criminal then that's okay.

reply

Sure, if he were a real cop we'd all have a problem with his tactics but it's cathartic to watch in fiction. It's the same reason we love superheroes in fiction but wouldn't be cool with a vigilante running around.
