it was somewhat of a stretch that Luther zooms in on Pell so quickly.
I guess we are meant to believe that he was lucky to look in Cameron's direction right off.
As for Luther picking out Cameron when he saw him, Cameron was the only one who wasn't looking where everyone else was looking, he was looking at Luther and immediately looked away when Luther's gaze came toward him. He began slinking away, looking guilty, looking like he was trying to escape without notice.
I didn't find this part hard to believe, especially since cops have a great deal of experience seeing and recognizing guilty people's behavior.
It was the next episode, season 2 episode 2 where I saw something I had trouble buying.
It was when Luther was called by the sex worker girl's mother to that meeting with the head of the criminal firm that owned the adult film and prostitution ring. At that point Luther had not done much that he could not get out of. He arrested a girl on suspicion of selling controlled substances to get her away from the criminals, and he held her at a secret location so they could not find her. He did not book her, so he would be in a little trouble if it were found out. But, not so much that he could not get out of it.
The bit I found hard to buy was this: his hand was nailed to the table by the criminal firm and he was told to commit a crime for the firm or else the firm would murder the mother and daughter. And Luther caved in to their demands.
I guess we are meant to believe that this criminal firm is so powerful and so connected that they are virtually immune to prosecution. But Luther had them on a felony assault (would be in the US, don't know what it is in the UK) and issuing death threats, and also bribing and threatening a police officer to commit a crime.
The mother and daughter could have testified against the firm, and put into witness relocation.
And the Luther is a strong character who doesn't like being pushed around. So when he caved I thought the writers stretched that plot device too far. But they needed him to cave in to the firm and agree do what they asked him to do. Then the firm has him over a barrel; they recorded him agreeing to their demands.
