There's a whole genre of anime and manga with the basic premise of the main character (male, female, homosexual...) stumbling between many possible relationships.

Yeah, but I also mean different aspects of the movie, not just the "do I fall for the English gentlemen or the American billionaire with his boyish charms" bit.
Well... there isn't much else to it other than that.
Everything apart from that choice is just filler.
You could cut out all those bits which are not about relationships and it would be the exact same movie.
Like BJ2 - the fact she ends up in a Thailand prison makes no difference for the plot of the movie beyond the fact that she is rescued by one and not by the other male.
She could have just as well been stuck in an elevator or left stranded in a foreign land.
