Shot out to those Grammy idiots who gave them award. Just shows how overrated Grammy is

Like those Grammy idiots suppose to judge artists by their merity, professionalism, music and talent. They have to be music professionals when they look at 5 acts and decide who to give it.

And there is no way in hell any professional musician can look at the way they spoke, with their broken English with heavy German and French accent and then start singing with perfect American accent in song and never ever sing live. It was so obvious that its astonishing they could go with that sheme for all that time.

Not to mention songs itself were just weak silly pop-songs. They did not deserve Grammy even if they sang themselves.

ABBA has entered the chat...

What about it?

ABBA girls spoke "European English" if you can call it.

And they never sang with American Accent. Like Milli did.

You can always spot American accent in American People. And its very hard to recreate for non-american person no matter how hard they try. Only English actors can do that. Because English is their native language. For Germans, French its impossible. And Rob had such cringe visible German accent. No way anyone could think he can go and "sing in American".

Sounds like English to me.

reply

Are you American? Maybe you just don't notice it.

American people have very visible American accent. English people have their own English accent. Which you could see in actors like Tom Hiddlston, Cumberbatch and basically every british actor. German have their own accent when they speak English, so french, so spanish people. To mimic American accent and speak like American is very hard. Because people used to speak differently in their own language.

I forgot Iggy Azalea. She mimics American accent very well. But again - she is from Australia, English is her native language.

Yes.

America has a LOT of different accents. I'm from the Northeast but speak in what foreigners might describe as a "CNN" accent, which is neutral from my perspective and is considered correct American English. Fortunately, I've avoided the NY, MA, and other regional New England accents but I digress.

But my point is that speaking phonetically isn't that difficult for a non-native speaker if they put just a bit of effort into it. I never listened to the Milli Vanilli guys talk (or sing for that matter) but ABBA sounds mostly American with a just a hint of European pronunciation on some words.

I’m no musician, and I was just a kid at the time, but I had the same thought the first time I heard them talk in an interview. Rob in particular.

You don't have to be a musician or singer.
There are many actors across the world (famous and unknown) who can perfectly imitate another language, accent, dialect.
Without even understanding what they're saying. ☺

reply

That’s half true. Actors work with vocal coaches and learn accents or dialects all the time for movie roles. It’s basically the mainstream for non American English speaking actors to learn an American accent to work in Hollywood.

While I would agree that you can learn an accent or dialect in your own language to a passable, or maybe even perfect level, it’s much different to speak a second language with no noticeable accent. Especially if you picked up the second language later in life. There are certain sounds you just can’t learn. Realistically no one wants to have an accent in a second language, they are trying to sound like a native speaker, they just can’t.

I don’t believe Rob could’ve ever been trained out of that accent. Maybe he could imitate a few words, or sentences. But we were to believe he wasn’t just imitating, he was singing, full songs and albums. In perfect English with no detectable accent. Even if did have that skill, it should’ve carried over to his regular speaking voice, which is the issue.

Well, producer Frank Farian was the male voice of Boney M.
He sang pretty well in American English, and Farian is even not an actor.

Frank Farian did not sing in American English. I watched Boney M famous hits. In none of them he sounds like American English. He sounds like broken foreign English.

No one can "perfectly imitate another language, accent, dialect". Ok, basically only those who have English as their native language can imitate American accent like I said. But others no.

You just see Hollywood movies where actors imitate foreign accent or speak another language they memorized words to. And for you it sounds ok. But real people who speak those languages just roll their eyes and laugh at how stupid and ridiculous those idiots sound.

American actors usually even struggle to imitate accent from other states of their own country.

And I would love to hear person from Spain or Latin America country how to them sound Jennifer Lopes, Demi Lovato Selena Gomes, Camila Cabello and other American singers who never lived among native speakers and learned Spanish from their parents. They must have huge accent for those who live in Spanish speaking countries.
