Any old port in the storm--Air conditioning

I was just confused about one thing. If the air conditioning had gone out in the wine cellar when Donald Pleasence character had left to New York, would he not have noticed that it was out immediately upon his return?

He knew it was off because he himself had turned it off, to speed up his brother's death. He did not know about the heart surge, because by the time he returned, the weather was back to normal. We are supposed to believe that the heat surge spoiled the wine, and that it was only able to do so because the AC was off. That's a bit dramatic license. In real life, it wouldn't work that way. A thick-walled cellar would barely be affected by a heat surge.

You may cross-examine.

I have the little novel this episode was based on. I'm going to have to dig it out and see if it sheds any light on the details, but if I remember correctly, the book and the episode were practically identical as far as plot and the lines, etc.

Please post the name of the book. I'd love to read it!

Adapted from the episode 'Any Old Port In a Storm'

From the book jacket. Guess I had it backwards, the book was based on the episode, not the other way around! It's a very small book, only 175 pages and the print is oddly large. It's a very fast read.
I have no idea how I got it, I suppose someone must have given it to me or it came from a yard sale or something.
I wonder if there are other episodes in print out there?

And if I remember right, Columbo checks the weather out for the day(a Tuesday) the brother died while "scuba diving", and they said it was in the high of 48 and a low of 42, then 2 days later (Thursday) it hit 109? Kinda freaky weather. I just rewatched the episode and they indeed said the the high on Tuesday was 48. Crazy California weather!

Good catch on the temperature extremes. I don't remember anyone ever mentioning it before.

Here's a side story regarding the episode.

Stanley Ralph Ross originally wrote the story with Victor Buono in mind for the role of Adrian Carsini; however the network had the final say. He also mentioned that he had written another story with Victor Buono in mind that also went to Donald Pleasence.

Jesus is the Son of God and my Lord and savior. Pretty cool.
