Lady in Waiting goof?

Shouldn't this considered double jeopardy, she cannot be arrested for
her brother's death the second time around since she was found not guilty
during her first trial?

People rate this episode 7.1, but because of this huge goof plot, it should only
be about 5.0 for the acting, otherwise her been arrested again for the
same murder was ridiculous and not worth such high rating.

Going by memory without watching it again I don't think there was a first trial just an inquiry (grand jury?) as to whether it was an accidental shooting or not.

reply

The word I should have used was inquest, it was not a trial.

Thank you for replying to my question. I have to go back and view this episode again online, but frankly I was so bored the first time I don't know if I want to watch it again. By the way there are online sites where you can watch all of Columbo's episodes but you have to be very careful because of viruses and know what to click on. If you're interested try typing "Primewire Columbo" in Yahoo search.

Columbo is on Netflix FYI!

Really? I found her transformation after killing her brother mind-blowing! She went from being this little milquetoast to being mad with power! I found her interesting to say the least. I thought she was a hoot. I enjoyed the character's immediate change in personality; I found it fun.

I love watching "Columbo" but I think this episode is predictable. The first time
he met her he knew that she was the murderer because her story did not match
the crime scene and after the inquest and the jury found her not guilty,
he saw an immediate personality change and that cinched it for him.

reply

I didn't get the feel that he knew right away. For example, he had no knowledge of the newspaper being brought in; no knowledge of the light being burnt out; no knowledge of the time/ratio between the shots & the alarm going off.

He may well have had suspicions for whatever reasons, but the evidence did not start piling up until later as I remember it.

Spoilers below
The bit I never got was the whole Cart before the horse thing. I just can't hear the dialogue properly when Columbo first questions Leslie's character. I never hear him admit that he heard the shots before the alarm.

Edit: I have re-watched since. The Sargent questions Peter (Leslie Neilsen) not Columbo. Also, he said he heard the shots, THEN, was asked and the alarm was going? He said, that's correct.
