My theory around Rockwells character "Sam" is that the Sam in this movie is the one that got back, i mean the original Sam.
The videochat his clone used to contact his daughter on will be shown. That means they can connect the movies through that video. We get to see what the original Sam has been up to for the past years...

I think you are correct about the clone who returned from the moon but I doubt much of the story will be about him. I expect there will be some very brief reference/cameo type thing for Sam

shareThe way I expect Sam Bell will connect to Mute is with Paul Rudd's and Justin Theroux's surgeon characters. In Moon, clones only have a 3-year lifespan after awakening. So I can imagine the clone of Sam Bell that escaped the lunar facility has been living on Earth and making arrangements with the two surgeons to have new organs and other biological components surgically implanted into him to extend his short life-span.
shareIn one of the promo images released it says free the 156 which refers to the clones from moon. You can kind of see Sam Rockwell but on Duncan jones twitter there is a sticker that says free the 156 with Sam on it and is in the same font.
