Plot holes and loose ends *SPOILERS*

Now I did enjoy this movie, it was fun and made me laugh several times but it was not as good as it should have been because of several plot holes and loose ends that were never tied up at the end. There are probably more but these are the ones I noticed:

1) When Malcolm first gets home with the letter he calls "Hattie? Trent?" suggesting Big Momma now lives with them and he expects her to be home yet no mention is ever made of her again and her absence is not explained.

2) Where is the baby? At the end of BMH2, Sherri has a baby but this child is never mentioned as far as I noticed in the movie. Are we to suppose Sherri has taken him/her on the retreat with her?

3) If it was too dangerous for Malcolm and Trent to return home or go to FBI headquarters, where did they get the disguises from?

4) It's established there is a leak at the FBI but this is never followed up or resolved.

5) The whole point of Trent's performance at the Showcase was to help Hayley get her scholarship but we never hear whether she gets it or not.

There were probably more or I may have missed some of the explanations but these jumped out at me and made me think there was a good 20 minutes worth of footage or script missing! Anyone got any thoughts on these?

May I add number

7. Trent sees the ballerina isn't wearing her necklace; it later turns up by the cabinet where the music box was. But it turns out that it was Haley who stole the music box (and she didn't have her Diva necklace because she wasn't one of them at the time), so how did the blonde dancer's necklace get there?

reply

Another one that wasn't important enough for the story to follow up later. It was a false clue, a red herring. Someone dropped a necklace there, maybe not even the ballerina.

The time frame of the films, in terms of the stories, need not have anything to do with the actual years of release. That's simply not understanding the idea of fiction, it's conflating fiction with the actual world.

To answer number two, I've read somewhere that this movie is supposed to be like a "reboot" of the series. Meaning, it ignores the 2nd film, which is why there is no baby(and also may be the reason for Trent's age just jumping to 19).

reply

^ Good, because 2 was really bad.

reply

Trent was 17. Remember he needed his step-dad to sign something because he was only 17.

The original concept of the film back in 2008 had a different plot line (allegedly). But they had/wanted to do the film on a cheaper cost (with Martin taking a lower pay) so they changed the plot. A lot of the plot holes I feel are just bad rewrites.

5) The whole point of Trent's performance at the Showcase was to help Hayley get her scholarship but we never hear whether she gets it or not.

___Not only that. But he liked her and they seemed to be building a relationship then at the end of the movie it's like peace, none of that cliche lets exchange numbers and keep in touch.

I apologize for grammatical errors- a side effect of IMDbing on my iPhone.

Trent should have been atleast 21 I this movie being that he was like 10 eleven years ago.

For (1) When he gets out of the car he says "Hey, Trent". Not "Hattie".

Otherwise, the only one of those I really consider a plot hole is (4). The others are not important enough to the story for them to be plot holes and/or we can easily just assume explanations for them. Even acquiring the costumes. It's just not important for the plot to know exactly where they got them from (storage someplace or whatever).

(4) is unusual enough and was the catalyst for the bust going bad in the first place that it IS important to the plot, so it's a plot hole to just forget about it later.
