had been killed instead of kidnapped when the baddies catch up with him in Sicily?

Would it have been a stronger inflection point for Helena to have a change of heart instead of how and why she changes in the film? Would his death would have forced her to face the consequences of her actions in a more dramatic way? Would have been too dark for a family film?

Problem: Who would have flown the second plane in which they return if not Tedy? Or could they have returned another way?

Killing off the tagalong child character would’ve probably been seen as too depressing for an Indiana Jones movie, especially when they already established that Mutt died.

Yeah..OK, how about this: Helena and Indy THINK Teddy is dead temporarily - much like Indy and the audience thought Marion was dead for a while in Raiders? This way he can still fly plane, and not depress the audience, while at the same time giving Helena a stronger character arc.

When I first heard early info and spoilers about this movie (and I think it's in the trailer, too) I really couldn't believe that the kid could actually fly a plane, I thought it was ridiculous.

But when I saw the film, he's got a pretend cockpit control panel and controls where he can practice flying, so that seemed much more reasonable.

It was a paper thin explanation but at least it was there.... and Short Round learned to drive a car in I would assume much the same way.

To drive a car is much easier than flying a plane, although Short Round needed physical assistance via wooden blocks tied to his feet to reach the pedals as he was so small, which is cute.
