"Time Has Come Today" instead of "Magical Mystery Tour" was a layup no-brainer....

"Time Has Come Today" by the Chamber Brothers https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hIqwzQ7g-Cc was born to be used in the apartment scene, I don't know how they missed it. I don't care how many other commercials or movies may have used it in the past, it was the right choice. It's not who uses something first, it's who uses it BEST. For instance, David Lynch used the Barber Adagio in 1980 which Oliver Stone used again 7 years later in Platoon. Which movie do people forfever associate with that music? I rest my case.

The Beatles song they actually used was OK, but it really could have been any other song from the 60s. Time literally "comes today"with the dial quest and the moon landing celebration literally happening on the same day. And holy shit, they even mention "the subway". Check out the lyrics and tell me this song wasn't thematically EXACTLY the song to be used:

Lyrics

Time has come today
Young hearts can go their way
Can't put it off another day
I don't care what others say
They say we don't listen anyway
Time has come today
(Hey)
Oh
The rules have changed today (Hey)
I have no place to stay (Hey)
I'm thinking about the subway (Hey)
My love has flown away (Hey)
My tears have come and gone (Hey)
Oh my Lord, I have to roam (Hey)
I have no home (Hey)
I have no home (Hey)
Now the time has come (Time)
There's no place to run (Time)
I might get burned up by the sun (Time)
But I had my fun (Time)
I've been loved and put aside (Time)
I've been crushed by the tumbling tide (Time)
And my soul has been psychedelicized (Time)
Now the time has come (Time)
There are things to realize (Time)
Time has come today (Time)
Time has come today (Time)

I would have briefly reprised it in the final scene as a bookend as well. By the way, I liked the movie quite a bit, but a few beats (such as this) were missed or not presented as strongly as they could have been (the very final scene).

I always felt that "Coming Home" used it best. Haunting. And Casualties of War was good too.

OK, but what do you think about "Time Has Come Today" for the aparment scene instead of "Magical Mystery Tour"? I think it should have been used in the trailer as well, instead of "Sympathy for the Devil". Devil does have some thematic relevance to the story too, but seriously, was it really a good idea to have a Satanic themed song for what is supposed to be a family July 4th movie? It may have give some more conservative movie-goers the wrong notion of what this film was about.

Likewise, the "It's called capitalism" line (which TOTALLY made sense in the context of the scene it was in and not in any way an endorsement of Marxism as was claimed by some), should have been left out of the trailer. It was an unforced error by Disney. They should know by now how polarised people are quick to take offense to anything with a hint of politics about it. Not something you want to distract people with in a trailer, which is designed to appeal to as large an audience as possible. I had no problem with the line in the film and didn't think it was pushing socialism let alone Marxism. But Disney and Hollywood need to be smarter than this.

Maybe Disney wanted to show off that they could use a Beatles song, which I read aren't cheap to use in a film.

reply

Yeah, I'm sure it cost a pretty penny to use. All the more reason not to use it, especially considering how much they already spent. They ended up paying both the Beatles AND the Stones when the Chamber Bros. would have cost much less.

I don't understand why they used a Beatles song from '67 when the story takes place in 1969. Get Back might have been the better choice. And the text fits too.

Magical Mystery Tour had a generic "Hey, it's the 60s!" feel to it, but no real clear connection to the themes of the film. Lots of other songs they could have used that would have fit better. Get Back works better than Mystery Tour if they insisted on using a Beatle's song, but I still feel it lacks the desperation and sense of time running out/coming to a head compared to the song I linked to.
