Anyone thought they should've...? (spoilers)

... left the kid?

The kid seemed pretty satisfied with his developing friendship with the girl, he's not as excited to leave the town and he obviously loves visiting the loving grandfolks. Also, he barely knows his mom and she herself probably has serious psychological issues after three years in jail. Not to mention that they can't speak Spanish and have no contacts in Venezuela.

The only downside of staying would be if something were to happen to his grandparents, the possible teasing of kids (although he already dealt with that) and never seeing his dad again. Sure, it's tough, but the position he's in now might be even tougher for him in the long run.

Both John and Lara knows that John is lying when he says the kid will stay at his grandparents. The kid would end up in a foster home, and never see either of them ever again.

Besides, the grandparents would be accomplices after the fact if they smuggled the kid to reunite with his parents. John's father knew that he was planning an escape, but since he only implicitly "told" John that he knew, he didn't have to lie to the authorities later (he only says they didn't speak of an escape, which is true). Surely John wouldn't want to risk causing his parents to live out their days in jail, as well as himself and Lara.

Ummm, no he would not end up in a Foster home. Both Grandparents would be absolved of any wrongdoing since the police had absolutely no proof of their involvement. As the legal next of kin and law abiding citizens they would easily get custody of their biological grandson.

But Lara and John knew he was lying about one thing. He was lying when he said he would find a way to get their son. Once they left the US, they would never be with their son again. The grandparents would probably take him to visit then in Venezuela from time to time, but they would always have to return with him otherwise they would get into serious trouble. John and Lara both knew this which is why Lara tries to commit suicide.
