The part was just to give a little credibility to the spring-and-escape method, that it did not just spring out of the Crowe character's fertile mind.
I would hardly even call it a role, his presentation was quite straightforward, any journeyman actor could have done it.
Yeah, but when you get advice from Liam Neeson on how to break out of prison, you feel confident enough to actually go through with it. He was very convincing.
