I wanted to like this more

I can't quite tell what I thought was missing, or maybe that it felt like it dragged on too long.

There was one moment, in the last quarter or so of this movie where I thought there was a big twist - but I could not figure out as I watched if I was mistaken. On the train he seemed to be confronted by the ghosts of the dead from whom he had stolen.

If it were clear that was the case, I would have liked this a lot more. But it wasn't, and I was a bit confused.

In the end, I think he died and was reunited with Beniamina, his lover but I felt drained by the end.

The moment when he…was so predictable, I saw it coming like a minute before it happened.

Are you talking about his vision on the train of the people asking if he'd seen their stuff anywhere?

I read them as the ghosts of the dead speaking through regular, ordinary, living Italians whose heritage he has stolen. It's that collective link to the past that he has stolen.

And that idea -- as expressed through the disused railway station -- that this heritage belongs either to 'no-one or everyone'.

Yes, I like this. I think if I rewatched this in a different mood I would enjoy it more. Thanks
