'Be My Dal'?
I don't get it. Was that supposed to mean something? Because it felt like it was.
shareI don't get it. Was that supposed to mean something? Because it felt like it was.
shareTwo theories here:
One, it didn't mean anything. Randall was just obsessed with not being seen as a joke, or doing something that would result in him being ridiculed and publicly humiliated. The guy had pretty much a borderline phobia of this happening, and while few would even notice one letter being upside-down, to Randall this was completely unacceptable. HE sees that one letter being upside-down as a potential disaster. He is so desperate to fit in and be accepted that he's stressing over something like that, just certain that if anyone sees it, everyone will start laughing at him and he'll just remain an outcast, seen as nothing more than the butt of jokes. Knowing that this is his worst fear, and that fitting in and being accepted is HIS dream, in contrast to Mike's, makes how that whole thing with the cupcakes turned out all the more sad for him.
Second theory-and it won't make sense at all unless you've at least seen the book, "Monsters University Fear Book", which is basically Mike's college yearbook. There is an "interview" with Randall at the Homecoming parade, in which Randall reveals he has a huge crush on the chick who becomes Homecoming Queen, who happens to be named Stephanie DALmar...so "Be My dal" might have in fact been a "Freudian slip", lol!

Actually, it was "Be my pal". He turned the one cupcake around, remember?
Yes, I know that it was supposed to say "Be My Pal",but honestly how many monsters would have really noticed if one letter was upside-down? THAT is the point I was making, that only Randall would consider that to be important. What if someone had taken and eaten some of the cupcakes, so that some of the letters would now be missing? Then it would have made even less sense in terms of a phrase, but Randall apparently didn't consider that. He just has that rather OCD thing going on with details so that one letter being upside-down was a major issue for him, even though he is probably the only one who would have given that a thought or even noticed it.

pm-reed was replying to the OP.
to the OP, be my "dal" didn't mean anything. it was just a fear of making a stupid mistake. the joke, obviously, was so that they could have him say he didn't want to look stupid ... despite the fact that he was bringing cupcakes to a frat party.
which by the way would be awesome cause cupcakes are awesome.

I know, right? No one can tell me that if someone showed up at a frat party, or ANY party, bringing cupcakes or sweets in general, that they wouldn't be a hit! It still wouldn't win poor Randall any friends, since most of the takers on those cupcakes probably wouldn't even remember who brought them, but the cupcakes would sure be a hit. It was such an innocent, and naive gesture on his part, though; he clearly was clueless as to what was considered "cool" or appropriate in social settings. It just sorta cemented my theory that Randall was probably raised by an elderly relative, influenced by people much, much older than himself, with limited contact with his own age group, which is really sad.

There'd probably be a definite status thing with the cupcakes. I mean, I guess it depends who you are and how you're looked upon by others. If you're a dork showing up to the frat party and you bring cupcakes, people might sneer at you and call you names while eating the cupcakes anyway. But if you're a kind of cool dork with somewhat of a reputation, they might say "weird thing for you to do" but still eat the cupcakes. But if you're a cool, popular person and you're above any potential social stigmas, bringing cupcakes would probably be a hit and if it wasn't, so what, you'd eat them yourself :) But then if you're too cool, you might just be called gay or something by your own peers (who would eat the cupcakes regardless).
So there's potential for a lot of esteem bouncing. Either way, the cupcakes are going to get eaten.

I thought 'dal' would be phonetically the same as 'doll', as in sweetheart.
Yeah, it did seem as though that would be some sort of in-joke...but unable to really think of one, I just kind of assumed that it was there for a chuckle, and a further demonstration of Randall's character. He's anxious and awkward, tough on himself, bothered by small mistakes--which tend to happen quite a bit because he isn't exactly the luckiest guy around.
I mean, the only thing "Dal" means to ME is Dalmatian--an abbreviation in the context of dogs. But dogs as we know them may not even exist in the Monster World, and besides, that would hardly be any kind of joke unless...like...one of the employees had a Dalmatian or something. Which I doubt. o.O The best observation is, unsurprisingly, from Pitbullady--and you'd never be able to think of it just by watching the movie. However, everyone who's enjoyed the film should DEFINITELY buy the Fearbook, along with the Essential Guide! They really enhance the experience, and your knowledge of the characters/world. Plus, the "Fearbook" looks, feels, and IS just like a real school yearbook. I actually keep it on my shelf of yearbooks from elementary through high school (I suppose some colleges publish them too, but I've never seen one...the Fearbook is certainly modeled on a middle/high school-type of book, though. I only wish it could have been even longer, with more signatures, friendship/couple collage and personal "ad" pages devoted to pictures of individual students, etc.! x3)
Anyway, yes...the interview with Randall is hilarious. He does his nervous-vanish when talking about the homecoming queen, Stephanie Dallmar, whom he says is beautiful. (The image of her is what makes it even funnier; let's just say that she's decidedly not what most humans would consider one of the pretty girl monsters!) But yes, quite cute.
I'm thrilled to have read the quote stating that there will be a "line" of Monsters films...whether they're feature-length or short, I do believe that at least one more is necessary. Especially after seeing MU (and reading the storybook in which we learn that Randall has an adooorable little nephew who looks just like him, in orange & yellow!), it just *won't* do to let the storyline end with his banishment and battering. Obviously his fans want to see him finally discover the friendship he's lacked seemingly all his life (and yeah, not to sound like a typical shipping fangirl, but I'd sure like for him to find romantic love, too.) I'm also interested in various other characters, especially the many intriguing ones introduced in MU, so additional films to fill in the rest of their futures will always be greatly desired...

people OVER thinking.
it's easy explanation...
he makes the cupcakes to get in with the cool kids (the joke is that this is already so lame) he notices an upside down cupcake and says something like "well that woulda been embarrassing", when in fact its already lame and embarrassing whether or not a cupcake is upside down. dal means nothing.
out by 16 or dead in the scene - but together forever.
People UNDER thinking...or not thinking at all, now THAT is a problem! IF you're that shallow, why bother even looking at a DISCUSSION board, for anything?
pitbulllady
As I said, it's hard to overthink this movie...and everything we'd pondered is legitimate (even if it didn't necessarily cross the filmmakers' minds in our exact terms. The nuances and layers of detail still ended up there, to be read into if people pay sufficient attention.) However, I ultimately do think that that's the case--"Dal" probably doesn't mean anything in particular. It's a little joke stemming from an awkward, easily-embarrassed student's failure to realize that the embarrassing thing, in everyone else's eyes, would be his "cheesy" cupcake platter itself, and not the fact that a letter is twisted around. Poor little dude. >m>
shareDal means lentil in Hindi
share"Be my lentil!"-Randy Boggs
That should have been his fearbook quote...if quotes had been included in the fearbook. x-) But selecting one for each individual student would have been a bit too daunting of a task, I reckon--despite the fact that I had vainly hoped for personal and friendship and couples' collage pages as well, just like in real yearbooks, and all such intricate and revealing details of real ones....knowing full well that the book would be absolute awesomeness without being able to be QUITE that realistic and thorough, not having physically slid through a door into the Human World from theirs. ^^'
