No oscar nom is still bugging me...

The Croods got nominated, despicable me 2 got nominated, yet monsters university had better ratings and honestly was a lot better than both movies (The croods was pretty good, but still not great) I believe there probably is a reason why they didn't choose this movie, but i'd like to know it. If they truly did it fairly based on critics opinions this movie was better animated, written better, received better ratings, and overall is a very entertaining movie for all ages. Honestly the academy just baffles me sometimes on their choices of who gets nominated and who wins, because I'm still mad that brave one a few years back (that movie is mildly entertaining at best, and not everyone liked it). Frozen wasn't great either, and I'm surprised they didn't try to release the lego movie for the academy last year, but if it doesn't win this year i will be completely blown away. 96% rating, haven't had an animated movie so highly praised and revolutionary since Toy Story 1 came out. So lets see if it wins, cause if not, the academy must be on some seriously dangerous hallucinogens Lol

I just watched Frozen yesterday and yes it was entertaining. I then started thinking about the previous winners and nominations and I started wondering what movie Pixar released and then I remembered Monsters university. I had to come here to double check but I couldn't believe it didn't even get nominated. I'm not saying it definitely should have been nominated and won, but after Wreck it Ralph losing to Brave and Monsters University not getting nominated, I'm not sure the Academy awards is that legit anymore.

That's exactly how i feel. I honestly believe it should be half the peoples choice and then if they did it "Fairly" should be judged and nominated based on ratings comparing all the animated movies of the year. Because MU was in the top 5 or 3 in terms of ratings, and i know many people (not just kids) enjoyed it. I laughed throughout and loved the ending, so that's why its still a shocker to me that it at least wasn't nominated for best animated, because it's one of the few movies that actually had originality, great voice acting work, story, and of course appeal to both kids and adults. When Brave won over wreck it ralph, that's when i realized the academy must just dig there hand in a bowl and choose at random who wins, because Brave was OK, but it was not the best animated movie that year, and a lot of people can agree with that.

reply

One reason though i can understand Brave winning is because Wreck it Ralph and Brave had close critic ratings, but Pixar collaborated with Disney to make Brave, while Wreck-It just had Disney, so i can understand if Disney made two good animated movies and wanting the credit for an Oscar to be given to the one movie that gives credit to both themselves as well as there long-time pals Pixar, so i understand it now actually why Brave one (Literally i just figured it out because i just realized that Wreck it was made by disney alone, while Brave was Disney and Pixar, so if you are Disney and you're going to win either way, why not be allowed to choose your winner? Just an opinion, but i believe it makes sense)

You don't think the Academy Awards are legit anymore? Just look at poor Leonardo Dicaprio :(

Varying how much you squint from film to film is not grounds for an Oscar.

You'd feel cocky too if you were full of myself.

Trust me, this bother me as much as it bothers you...
Hey come on, Despicable Me 2 and The Croods gets in but not Monsters University?
And I thought Frozen is way overrated as well, it's just a mediocre flick in any aspect, I even found that Tangled was done even better.
If they wanna to give the Oscar to the right person, the year's most deserved nominee surely belongs to The Wind Rises.

Based on your tense, I'm unsure if you're aware that it was nominated last year. It won't be in the running this year.

I am still flabbergasted by this, although I haven't seen Despicable Me 2. However, I definitely consider this better than The Croods and on-par, probably better, than Frozen (it is overrated and had some big writing flaws; it's popularity honestly stems from the characters and Let It Go, and maybe the animation - the ice stuff was beautiful). I just feel Monster's University should have definitely been nominated. It was a great flick that got totally ignored. It was definitely a long-shot to win, but was deserving of that nomination. Also, Brave should have lost to Wreck-It-Ralph or ParaNorman. Both of those films were way better. Brave was nothing special at all.

It is absurd that they didn't even nominate MU, and it is 100% obvious to me that the sole reason for that is "diversity"--they didn't want to give the award to Pixar year after year, or seem to be playing favorites (even though most of the time Pixar does produce the best films), so they deliberately avoided even nominating theirs this time. The winner was completely clear from the beginning, so it really didn't even matter; it still would've gone to Frozen. However, this would have been my #2 pick, and certainly deserved to be among the choices.

It's a wonderful film, and while there'll always be those who just don't like it or who criticize and badmouth good things merely for the sake of being contrary, it's very well-liked and successful. Some of us fans even prefer it to the first. Some people also tend to automatically assume that sequels, prequels, or midquels are going to stink and degrade their opinion of the previously-made film (somehow), and a few are so invested in that preset view that they don't give the next one a really fair chance. They're looking too much through the negativity lens to recognize another great movie--if it indeed is one--when they see it. So that happens, too.

I believe Frozen is a masterpiece, by far the best Disney has achieved since their last round of excellent films that basically ended with Tarzan. The Croods is a little better than I'd expected, but nothing fantastic. It was pretty cliche. Despicable Me 2 I found entertaining, funny, charming, and cute. What more would you want from a family flick? And yet, in my view MU is still far more original, clever, and engaging, with more "staying power"...as in, it stayed with me after I'd seen it, I wanted to read and learn more about the characters, I still want to see much more, it entered my long list of favorite movies, I bought it, etc. Oh, and of course Brave...I adore Brave. Merida is now one of my top four princesses. I think it deserved its win, but again, the Academy didn't want to appear lazy and dismissive of anyone animating a film except for Pixar. (Of course, since Pixar is now PART of Disney even though retaining full control over their film production, Disney's odds of being connected with a winner are greater than ever. With no more Don Bluth and the like giving us some Disney-caliber movies, most of the competition is just, imo, not as great.)

The Lego Movie frankly didn't impress me much...it's not terrible, but from all the talk I expected so many more laughs.
Wreck-It Ralph is very, very good, and ParaNorman's good too. I would probably rank these recent movies: Frozen, Brave/MU (hard to choose), Wreck-It Ralph, ParaNorman, Despicable Me 2, The Croods, The Lego Movie.

And hopefully I'll get to see The Wind Rises soon.

I thought Monsters University was way better than The Croods or Despicable Me 2. But the Academy Awards are BS anyway.

I agree. Another academy decision regarding the animated movie category is the year before where Brave beat Wreck It Ralph and Paranorman. That was dumb. I never even saw Brave. It seemed like it was basically Mulan with white people. I will agree the Academy has made a lot of decisions some of which happened before I was born that I don't agree with. Al Pacino didn't even win til scent of a woman. Then there's other stupid stuff like 2001 A Space Odyssey losing best director to Oliver and also not even getting nominated for best cinematography. Heck Stanley Kubrick was never even nominated once for cinematography.

Green Goblin is great! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t1L4ZuaVvaw
