The fact that Filth and McAvoy's incredible performance.....

have been criminally ignored by the Oscar's and BAFTA just proves that they know f all about good cinema and great acting. It also proves they are just a load of backslapping wank and pretty worthless as to whats good and challenging in cinema today.

I agree. I understand that nominating James for an Oscar would probably never happen, because the film wasn't released in the US in time. But the BAFTA? That was shameful, a disgrace. I'm still angry about that snub. McAvoy is an actor immensely dedicated to the UK film industry, gives the performance of a lifetime in a well received UK film, and is stabbed in the back by the very industry he helps promote, because the BAFTA felt they had to kneel for big American studios to walk all over them. I'll never respect that award again.

Didn't realise the film was released outside the oscars release window. Fair enough. But the BAFTA snub is unforgivable. Normally i don't give a hoot about who wins at whatever awards ceremony, but McAvoy gives such an incredible performance (probably his best yet) that it's all the more puzzling as to his omission.

Yes, it's a tough film, but surely the British film industry should be encouraging this sort of edgy cinema?

Just thinking about this upsets me.. He certainly got screwed on this one. Filth was in my top 10 for the last year, could even have been top 5 and for his acting to not get any recognition is pretty shameful.

MacAvoy still isn't that well known in the US. He's done some work that's gotten attention, but isn't the sort of name that would get an Oscar nom for this. BAFTA maybe, but no shot at Oscar.

There are people out there that actually still respect/lend credibility to ANY awards organizations?

This is not normally my type of film, but I sat bemused through Antichrist so I guess I will try anything.

How was JoAnn Froggart (Mary)? I love Downton Abbey, Bates and Anna being my favorite characters, I've seen Brendan Coyle in other roles, but I haven't seen anything else with JoAnn. I thought this one was likely to be a 180 for her.

reply

Yes, the thing that puzzles me is that no matter what review you read whether they hated it or loved it, everyone was saying that this was a career best performance for McAvoy.

He's been nominated in the past for Atonement and Last King of Scotland, so by that logic, I thought he'd be a shoe in for a BAFTA nomination, maybe a win.
