I was curious to wether she left him because he was already edgy-mad before or if he went nuts only afterwards.

Its implied that he was starting to drift on the dark side. I can imagine he had a lot of outbursts like the one he had with Amanda. Also, at the supermarket, the wife looks really scared and the daughter doesn't even look at him.
