Give writer and director John Logan points for creativity, exceptional inclusion and casting Kevin Bacon. But the movie could have used a lot more of the camp-slasher horror part.
Logan tries to cover too much ground with too many characters in such a short running time. While it's a detriment to the horror, They/Them does deliver on endearing characters with rooting interest.
The movie all but forgets to be scary
“They/Them” doesn’t know which direction to take: A slasher movie? Or psychological thriller about conversion therapy? It tries doing both and never grasps the thrills and chills it’s desperately wanting to conjure.
Writer/director John Logan crafts They/Them with the utmost sincerity, but that goodwill does not compensate for an aggressively flat horror exercise.
A Fright Free Slasher That Completely Misses The Mark.
May have something sincere to say both about ant-LGBTQ tactics and the slasher movie genre. Unfortunately, combining them ends up sabotaging both sides of the story.
