just passed breaking even

budget was about 30 million and it's up to 32 million now. great to see! add in dvd sales and it looks like WTP will turna profit. great for the people who still love 2D. hopefully this will make Disney think twice about eliminating 2D hand drawn movies now. (they stated they won't make anymore from now on)

Actually, no it hasn't passed breaking even. The production company only gets to keep about 50%-55% of the revenue from the domestic theatrical releases, and 30%-40% internationally. Plus, they have to make the money back not only from the production cost but also the marketing. Winnie had a very small marketing budget, maybe about $10 million, but that still adds to it. So at the present moment, Winnie the Pooh isn't even close to breaking even. Out of that $32 million worldwide box-office gross, Disney probably got to keep about $13 million of the domestic and $2 million of the international. Factoring in advertising, that still leaves Pooh about $25 million short of breaking even.

Most of the money made by movies nowadays, though, comes not from theatrical releases but from DVD sales. DVD sales have a much larger profit margin of 66%, versus just 30%-55% from the theaters. So in the coming years it will likely break even through Disney's usual cycle of DVD re-releases, but as of right now it is moderate flop. It would need to sell somewhere around $37.5 million in DVD's to break even on this first run, which quite honestly is pretty much impossible.

Well if Princess and the Frog made $71 million in DVD sales, I don't think that $37.5 million seems too outrageous.

But "The Princess and the Frog" made four times as much money at the box-office.
