Why don't they shoot a movie about Mickey?

Or Donald? etc. Isn't it about time?

THE WORLD IS YOURS

There is Mickey Mouse Clubhouse and the video game Epic Mickey, so it's not like they don't care at all.

But Mickey Mouse Clubhouse is for 2 year olds X(

reply

Yeah, Clubhouse Mickey scarcely counts. Epic Mickey was a nice nod, but not exactly a leap after a couple decades of other Mickey-related videogames.

I think the main this is that they just don't know what to do with the character/are afraid of ruining him. How do you take a now nearly century old cartoon character that (let's face it) no longer appeals the the sensibilities of today's children and make a successful film out of it? As far as I'm concerned, they could just take the Winnie-the-Pooh route and simple try to recapture the very same charm and tone as the early cartoons, jettisoning any supposed "improvements" (read: bastardizations). But I think we all know that is unlikely. Mickey Mouse is still the face of Disney, so the suits will be pressured to go big. They'd be too afraid of disappointing modern audiences by not including cutting-edge CGI, an action-oriented script, and some kind of "hip" re-imagining of Mickey himself. But then of course they run the risk of completely destroying their flagship character.

Basically, I think they're just plain stuck. Unless someone REALLY smart and talented gets behind the project, Mickey Mouse will eventually make the full transition from beloved character to a mere company logo.

JOIN, or DIE.

Giving Mickey his own movie to me is shaky ground.

Mickey was a character created out of the animated short-subjects, and in my mind, he works best in small doses. If you give too much of him, it's not going to work.

I've seen the application done with the Looney Tunes characters, and it just doesn't work right.

When Mickey makes cameo appearances, it can be done good, like in Roger Rabbit.

I agree, uruseiranma.

Although I really hate Mickey Mouse (there, I said it) and I think listening to that annoying voice for more than five minutes would be a torture beyond anything Satan or Stalin could come up with, I really do believe there are very few iconic cartoon characters who can hold their own (and our attention) for an hour or better.

Agreed completely with Uruseiranma. Mickey is an everyman type character, who worked best in the simple gags of the classic cartoon shorts he debuted in, which parodied every day life. He just isn't a character that lends himself to the grander, more serious story dramas of a full-length feature... even a more comedic one like the Three Musketeers, IMO. I think if Disney wants to get serious about relaunching Mickey/Donald/Goofy/etc., they're best bet would be putting them in cartoon shorts that run before full-length movies, like we got with the Home Theater Goofy short a few years ago.

a disney high up employee said that a full length mickey film was in the works. http://www.bleedingcool.com/2011/03/24/scoop-mickey-mouses-first-feature-length-film-being-developed-at-disney/

and mickey was featured in half of fun and fancy free, and has the best part in fantasia (imo). but i personally would like to see a full length movie featuring him, i feel like they should of kept the 3 musketeers idea for donald goofy and mickey, instead of letting toon disney do it, even though i think toon disney did a good job.

John Farvuruarea (Iron Man 1/2) will be directing Magic Kingdom. I am guessing its like night at the museum except inside disneyland/world

i don't think a mickey movie is impossible. it may be difficult but can be done.
maybe make it 60+ minutes of quality material like pooh with the best art and writing teams at disney.

reply

I'll tell you what- make it a SILENT movie, and I'd consider watching it. for 60 minutes, I'd rather listen to Fran Drescher than Mickey Mouse.

if they do decide to make it, it most likely won't be silent. i mean it's not like mickey is the only who's gonna talk for the whole movie. if you personally can't stand his voice you don't have to watch it.

Personally, I like the idea of a Mickey film, they can make it about 60 minutes without end credits, because it shouldn't be any longer.

A little Mickey goes a long way. But yeah, if they make a MM movie, I probably would never see it because of that. He's a beloved character to be sure. But he's doled out in small doses which works well for his character. He's a mediocre character, but a great icon.
Besides, he's not really all that expressive. I don't think that cute ol' mouse could hold an hour-long movie. He lacks a certain amount of torment. He would need some serious villains.
I think there's a good reason he hasn't had a feature film in his 80+ years of life.

I've been thinking Disney should do a Mickey movie for quite some time. Even though Disney uses the classic characters as icons and theme park photo opportunities, it doesn't seem to fully embrace the appeal of them beyond that. Disney also doesn't seem to realize the popularity of or potential in later characters from its TV series from the pre-"The Little Mermaid" rebound, like the Gummi Bears for example.
