Luke and college

Will Claire ever learn that not every kid needs to go to college? I would have thought that the Haley disaster would have opened her eyes a bit. But, no. Luke must go to college, no matter how dumb he is. I'll bet she won't let him consider community college, either; it will have to be a traditional 4-year school or she will have failed as a mother.

Not too long ago, I think it was Claire who said not everyone needed to go to college, that air conditioners will always be breaking (directed at Luke). He shook his head, said he had looked into it, it was a lot of classes.

I remember that, but now Claire seems to have forgotten it. There was also the time when she and Phil were talking about their "5-year plan" for a kid-free house. Phil said "Luke will be off at college" and Claire said "or, somewhere."

Claire wants her kids to have a future. Alex is the only one who has a clear one at this point.

And my point is, you can have a future without college. I thought Claire realized that too when she made the AC repair comment, but that seems to be forgotten now. An AC repair technician can make a very good living. So can a carpenter, welder, electrician, etc.

Too many people are stuck in the mindset that a college degree is not only a guaranteed path to success, but the only one. Neither is true. A lot of kids are graduating college with tens of thousands of dollars in debt and end up working at Starbucks because they have no skills. On the other hand, a kid can start an apprenticeship after high school, actually get paid while he's learning, and 4 years later have a marketable skill, no debt, and some money in the bank.
