shareIt really does look good. The trailer gets the feel of the book, the tragedy and beauty. I could almost feel the tears that want to come out. Plus such a talented cast... I can't wait for the film to come out - one of my most anticipated films.
shareSame! The trailer got me really, really, really excited. I love Alicia Vikander and I know she can handle any role. She's extremely talented and beautiful.
shareI haven't seen her acting yet but it looks like she is superb, judging from the trailer. Can't wait to see her acting. For me, I'm looking forward to Colin Morgan. I love his acting - big fan of his theatre work, independent films, and of course his 5-year show Merlin.
I saw some people oddly say that the trailer looks like Atonement, which I don't get. I looked at Atonement's trailer and it looks nothing like this one, especially since this is actually from a memoir and Atonement is from fiction. Maybe the similarity is that it features romance and war? But the story is completely different.
I've seen Atonement and I think the only similarity is like you said war/romance. I like this genre the most.
About Colin Morgan, I haven't seen any of his work yet, but Merlin is on my priority list of TV shows to watch. Maybe I'll get motivated to watch it after Testament of Youth!
About Alicia, I highly recommend A Royal Affair and Anna Karenina, but also her Swedish film Till det som ar vackert (I think it's called Pure in english). These are all on my toplist of my favourite films. I can tell you that she's truly magnetic on screen. Ever since I've seen her in Anna Kareina she's been my #1 actress.
Got intrigued with it and saw the trailer for "A Royal Affair" and I remember that I did see that film before. She was brilliant in it. And Mads Mikkelsen was in it too - another brilliant actor (love him in Hannibal). I heard she was going to be in a lot of films soon too, which is a testament of talent. Also she does a remarkable British accent so kudos to her. I don't have a favourite actress - she looks like the type to have a lot of grit and gravitas so she might become a favourite once I see more of her acting.
I like Colin Morgan and I hope you enjoy his acting as well. Merlin was definitely what made him popular but he shines in theatre and his independent films too. He might be unknown worldwide but he's had a lot of acting awards/nominations and critical acclaim in the UK. I'm glad he's finally going into mainstream films.
It seems as if both our favourite actors will have some vital scenes together (if you know what happens in the memoir). I can't wait to see it on film!
It was a beautiful trailer but I was disappointed in it as a fan of Vera Brittain's writing. They make it look like a pure romance when it's about so much more than that and, yes, I do see the Atonement comparisons others have made. I'm still looking forward to it though! Hopefully the trailer is misleading so as to sell it to the US audience.
If possible, everyone should give the BBC2 version from the 1980s a watch. I only saw it for the first time a couple of years ago and it still holds up very well with great performances and is pretty faithful to Brittain's writing.
Well as the trailer is 2 minutes long I wouldn't judge the entire film by it. I'm sure it'll be great. Even if they don't exactly follow the book I don't really care, because it's an adaptation and they tend to be a little off the track. A film is made mostly for the audience to enjoy and if that means focusing on the romance I don't mind. I just hope it all comes together as a good movie with a plot.
Also I wish I could read the memoir, but it wasn't published in my native language. I mean I could read it in english, but I think I would enjoy it more if I could focus on the plot entirely. So hopefully it'll be published here one day.
I think they're focusing so much on the romance because it would draw more people in. It's probably a marketing ploy especially since they feature Kit Harrington (possibly the most popular actor in the film at the moment) so much even though his character was not the main focus of the memoir. I hope there will be a second trailer that focuses more on the heavy parts of the book - the war, the survival, the hope, and just the reality of the times back then. They should also show her relationship with others, like her brother and the other friends who she adored.
I hope that with the film coming out, the book does get translated in your language so you and others could enjoy it. It is remarkable even though it's a long and very detailed read.

Indeed - I think that the trailer is impressive. Understand that the film will be out in the UK on 2nd January 2015. Looking forward it a great deal.
