A delightful gem of a movie

What a joy this little movie was for me. It's one of those that Netflix was about to axe, or I would've never watched it. I'm so glad I did.

I love so much about it--a character-driven, intimate, warm story full of the most seasoned of British actors (Pauline Collins, Maggie Smith, Billy Connolly, Tom Courtenay, Michael Gambon), a beautiful setting, the music, an inspiring theme about something everyone who is fortunate enough (considering the alternative) will experience--aging. It speaks to me.

My hat is off to the director, Dustin Hoffman. He outdid himself. With his fame, he could've easily injected himself in front of the camera as well as behind it in this one, but he didn't. I respect him for it. Not even a Hitchcock-style cameo to be found.

I appreciate the attention to detail. The supporting actors are true, real-life retired musicians from the grandest of scales such as Metropolitan Opera performers, concert pianists, etc. I do wonder if there are actual retirement homes exclusively for retired musicians. I love the idea. They can indulge the passion of their life's work with other like-minded individuals.

This one's a winner in every way.
