ABC Sucks

I was just rewatching the last season of LOST and it reminded me of how stupid ABC was/is for cancelling the only show that had a legitimate chance of following that series up. I watched every episode of Flash Forward only to find out it was cancelled days before the finale aired. Executives apparently claimed that the numbers were to low to justify continuing the series, but 6+ million a night is pretty good for a show that had its timeslot moved more than once. Maybe if there had been more support from the network, the show could have caught on. Amazingly, I don't think any of those magical replacement shows are even close to that magic number.

Instead, we're supposed to be satisfied with a second season of V. Thanks a bunch for this new, original series, ABC. I never saw it back in the 80's when it was called V, and then V, The Final Battle.

Wow, who pays people to regurgitate crap ideas from 30 years ago and call them "new" or groundbreaking?

And I can't even buy the only season of Flash Forward on Blu-Ray? Funny, cause I watched the whole series in HD...but I'm supposed to throw away money on a halfass DVD set?

Happily, I haven't even heard of an ABC show since they cancelled Flash Forward that I've been remotely interested in watching. ABC is the lowest of the networks...

Actually, it's the following way they were shown.

V The Mini Series.
V The Final Battle.
V The Series.

I know you might not be interested, but get thy facts right, please. Before mouthing off about V.

Flashforward is for punks!. End of discussion.

Yeah ABC sucks for cancelling this series and a pitty that other networks did not pick this series up... i'm not a fun of lost so i dont watch it but after watching the whole of season 1 of this series in 1 day, i was looking forward for season 2 only to find out that this series got cancelled! what a shame!

Agreed! ABC sucks! When FF got canned and V got a second season, I was shocked and confused. There is nothing on ABC for me to watch.

Same here........

Did Elizabeth Mitchell sleep with an ABC exec or something? That's the only reason I can think why V is the one that was renewed, since FF was a far superior show.

Damn I miss Mark Benford......

Why didn't any other network, like Syfy, pick it up? It's a mystery.....

Too cerebral for the masses. :/ If you look at what's popular--Survivor, Dances With the Stars--you see that intelligent usually doesn't work for networks. Lost was an exception.

Sad or funny, depending on how you look at it.

Exactly, reality tv is still WAY TOO POPULAR and it's killing great creative original shows like this...for some reason networks always think that they can strike gold w/ a new show, so they cancel good shows w/ preexisting fanbases (angel, flashforward, kyle xy,veronica mars, firefly) and it's just sad

The networks seem to have an ADHD way of operating. They are all gung ho, and then when there isn't *instant* gratification, or there's an unforeseen challenge, they dump the current project and move on to the next. Flash Forward was a fabulous show. It had some kinks at first, but they resolved those, namely stepping up the pace. I know ratings said they were going down, but they need to do a lot more research into the whys. One clear example is Fringe--everywhere I go, I see people listing Fringe as a favorite show. Even on forums where people only watch cable shows, Fringe is the one network show that's listed. I have only seen a few episodes, because I can only squeeze in a few shows each season, but it's on my Netflix list. How many people like me have the same reason? Also, apparently they changed the day it's on, so most fans now watch it via DVR.

The Event sounded like it would be a really excellent show, and then, imo, it started slowly and didn't grab me, but the concept was still interesting enough that I kept watching. I think it has just now begun to find its rhythm. But I'm sure it's too late now. They'll probably yank that and start all over.

I HAVE to believe that investing in new shows over and over again, recruiting new talent, beginning new marketing campaigns, overhauling schedules, is more expensive than working to improve an existing show.

In addition, they need to take another look at how they make money. DVR is a reality now, so they need to work around it. Do they really think people who don't DVR sit there and watch commercials? I sometimes watch an intriguing commercial on a recording, and would have watched the same commercial live. However, any commercial that's bad enough to skip with DVR, would have been muted live, and that's when I'd write an e-mail or tidy up the room. They could do more (subtle) product placement, they could roll out more tie-in books, games and other merchandise, and put product logos in the upper right corner. Then, they could offer the shows for a cable fee for anyone who doesn't want the logo in the upper right. They need to start using their heads.

OMG ABC is a business, and the total viewers do not matter, it's the key demo (18-49 year olds) that matters!!! ABC is not a charity, the ratings for this show were so low it had to be canceled.

Why must all of the thought-provoking television shows on cable be cancelled after a single season of low viewership?

If they must be cancelled, I say that the creators of the shows should be forewarned so that they can at least write a decent ending, rather than leave us hanging and wanting more (like "FlashForward" did).

i personally think all networks blow honestly. They seem to cancel real good shows.

I just cant see why a show like Flashforward gets cancelled after a single season but shows like Two and A Half Men, American Idol, Gossip Girl, and etc get to stay on television? I mean I know why, its because 80% of people are morons with the equivalent attention span of a newborn, but it still hurts. I've felt the same way about many shows over the last few years one of which, Journeyman, still hurts to think about.

Some Of My Favourite Shows That Were Cancelled Over The Last Few Years.

(Not in any order)

Flashforward
Firefly
Journeyman
Studio 60 On The Sunset Strip
Dead Like Me
Pushing Daisies
Moonlight
The Dresden Files
Terminator The Sarah Connor Chronicles
Wonderfalls
Rome
John Doe
Dollhouse
Invasion
Tru Calling

For me, the first show to devastate me by it's cancellation was "The Others" (not the firm, it was an NBC show that aired before the film and had an entirely different plot.) I was so into that show, and I went on a vacation for a week and came back and it was gone!

I haven't trusted the networks since. Despite Fox's despicible news programs, they do have a slightly better track record for keeping things on the air (X-Files, Fringe... even giving Dollhouse one more season than Joss Whedon thought they would). Cable networks are the best because they can show things whenever they want... although I don't know what happened with the Showtime/BBC series, "Meadowlands". That was a huge waste of time since they never wrapped it up. There should be some rule that states that they have to provide an ending to every show show that makes sense and wraps up every mystery that was created (if they can have a censorship board to prevent shows from having too much nudity or "foul language", why not a decency in viewer satisfaction board?).

I suspect the real culprit is the Neilson ratings system. Since I was a child I wanted to be a "Neilson family" so I would have a say in what they air on tv (makes me feel even more sympathetic to the Suffragettes and the Civil Rights Advocates after them - of course those were the days before our lives weren't so centered around entertainment that we actually cared about politics - although I do still vote). As it is, making reality shows because they are cheap and having them supposedly eaten up by viewers just tells the rest the world what they have long suspected (and want to think) which is that Americans are STUPID. With all of the technology they have these days, can anyone really say that they don't know what people are really watching (even if it's on DVR? If intelligent shows are too hard for people to get into unless they watch from the very beginning (the only reason why I can imagine they are more interested in fluff) then they should be repeating and staggering the intelligent shows so that people can catch them. With the proliferation of On-Demand, they should be advertising the hell out of shows that can be accessed anytime and anywhere!

We have to get as many people as possible to watch intelligent shows, and we need someone to listen when we cry out because a great show ha been cancelled before it's timel The way things are now is not only unfair, it's insane and bad for America!

To bad the network didn't follow up with at least a couple more episodes to tie up he series like they did for Jericho. Which was another great show that was canceled.

This is the post I came here hoping to see.

Almost all of these Single Season Shows were shown here in the UK on Channel 4.

Along with FlashForward, I really miss Invasion which had some great subtleties of character.

Rome was spectacular and such an interesting way to 'update' history.

Pushing Daisies was almost unique in being a bright show, as opposed to the contemporary dark dramas.

I don't see many new American dramas these days
(the only one I am currently watching is The Handmaid's Tale)
so either Channel 4 isn't buying them or
they are being shown on Netflix, Amazon Prime, Sky etc.

I miss the golden age of SciFi TV Shows
(about ten years ago, it seems)

Actually, I watched an early podcast for "FlashForward" which stated that they originally had a 6 season story thought out ahead of time. What said story-line involved, though, we may never know. Here's a link to it if you're interested:

And to add, it was quite popular here in the UK and throughout Europe. Quite a lot of shows in America survive without the extra income from Europe. It baffles me to think they wouldn't try another season. I guess they had high expectations and they didn't pay off.
