So are they gonna drag this out til 2016 now????

I like this show but if they are gonna do a 'Lost' and milk this highly original premise for all its worth, i can see myself being turned off. I would much rather they wrapped it up in a couple maybe three series for the sake of the story line than keep throwing in curve balls just to keep people hooked. Frankly, the acting isn't good enough for that to work for me.

I don't think their ratings will let them draw this out much longer.

No worries. In 2012, Google will buy Disney and integrate their actual FF technology into the story.

I don't get people who complain when shows like Lost or Flashforward go on for a couple of seasons. Lost is ending in 6 seasons which is very short for a highly successful show. So the show is hardly being milked.

These shows are meant to be different with twists and turns and cliff hanger endings. They're thinking man shows. If you don't have the brain capacity to digest this type of show then stick to Desperate Housewives and old Friends reruns.

reply

I agree. And certainly "Friends" is especially guilty, as its still being re-run almost daily on season 1 on TV somewhere, 17 years after it first aired! Seriously???

I guess at least the writers strikes didn't affect this show... if this is anything to go by, they haven't been writing since 2004 anyway!

reply

but if they are gonna do a 'Lost' and milk this highly original premise for all its worth

Riiiight.

Out of ALL tv shows out there you chose to accuse LOST for milking it for all its worth. One of the only shows in tv history whose producers decided to end it while it's still successful by setting an end date halfway through the series. Okay then. That makes sense....not.

Not Heroes, not Prison Preak, not 24......no....LOST is the show that's milking it. Yep.

And just to be clear, I agree with you on FlashForward. The show doesn't have enough potential to keep things interesting for 6-7 seasons seeing as it's already struggling to tell a coherent story now in its first season. But LOST!? I mean, I'd understand if you said you don't like it. Everyone's entitled to his/her opinion. But accusing LOST of milking it for what its worth is quite ridiculous.

reply

sorry Lost fans - i never got it so am probably biased against it - heroes and prison break are also prime examples of producers recognising the cash cow. i wonder how much the integrity of the writers is before they snap and take the money...shame

"But accusing LOST of milking it for what its worth is quite ridiculous."
Not really. 6 years/6 seasons/120 eps, for it all to come down to... to finally reveal two hidden characters and their agenda and what the island is for all that time is not milking?!

"Out of ALL tv shows out there you chose to accuse LOST for milking it for all its worth."
True, but then that is what he chose as an example. His right. But he could've also mentinoned any other show and someone else would've jumped on his throat. Where is the logic? It was a show he picked, for whatever reason he felt, it shouldn't be no more than that.

"One of the only shows in tv history whose producers decided to end it while it's still successful by setting an end date halfway through the series. Okay then. That makes sense....not."
Come on! That is just an exaggeration. What the Lost producers saw was that they were heading to a black hole, they knew it, the fans knew it and everyone else. The show got a lot of flack for their lack of direction (mainly in s2 and s3 where they just introduced more and more stuff without anything really linking to past or future closure). So in an act of desperation, they got this brilliant idea to actually for once put an end date to a network tvshow. They did it for self-preservation. Don't buy in to anything else, like "integrity", it doesn't exist in network tv. They made a good call, cause the ratings for their penultimate season was not that impressive for such an expensive show, I can only wonder what the ratings are for their last season. If the show had gone beyond season 6, I am pretty sure they would have been cancelled (like all shows do eventually but then pretend it was their decision) and even the hardcore fans would and could never hold up their reputation as "knowing what the hell they were doing for 6 seasons". They surely didn't want to end up as their neighbouring show: 24. Who got cancelled like a chump out of nowhere! Faded to obscurity and became a laughing stock. SELF-PRESERVATION!

either way, Lost is ending on its own terms, and not out the blue.

i don't think milking is the correct term. When they set the end date, they had direction, they knew the story the wanted to tell, and and they stuck to it.

Grey's Anatomy.. that's a show being milked.

if they milked anything it would have been season 2 and 3, when they had no idea how long lost would last.

As far as "Lost" is concerned, I agree that it's lost its steam and should conclude. The Season 6 "keeping the evil genie in the bottle" theme, I think, is far less interesting than what was done in prior seasons. In any event, it's hard to keep the actors on a successful tv show from wanting to move on, especially in an ensemble cast like in Lost.

As for FF, when I heard the 2016 date, I was surprised it wasn't 2012 which would tie it into that whole Mayan Calendar conspiracy thing. (as a side note, that conspiracy theory is particularly ridiculous because there's not one shred of evidence that the Maya themselves - who certainly had no greater insight to the end of the World than anyone else - believed the World would end in 2012). But I highly doubt FF could exist for another 6 years and I fear the end will be sooner than later given the atrocious ratings. Another year or two would be nice - perhaps focusing more on Janis and less on Mark.

To have that kind of longevity for this kind of story, it would seem necessary for the story to get a clear, compelling, masterfully cast, legend-making performing villain sooner rather than later. I imagine that's in the plans. But when???

My hunch is that if ABC rolls the dice on a season 2 because they are more happy with the post-hiatus team than the pre-hiatus team and season 2 doesn't increase audience at least 10-20%, it's over. But, even that bit of increase in ratings might be enough to try to increase again in a season 3.

It's a difficult prospect with a serial drama to grow audience.

And there's always the question of what's in the pipeline ABC can replace it with.

That was evident from day one. That is a truth on ALL network tvshows. Switch to cable.

That is very much true.

i disagree with some of the comments a tv show can be cancelled even if the show has really good high ratings like tv show V still had very good viewing figures in 80's but then they wanted another new show something fresh instead...same as seaquest dsv in 90's the guys at NBC only cancelled cause they didnt like the way the story was goin in season 3 while alot of fans disagreed!!!

reply

Well they could follow the book and drag it out until 2030. But except for the Simpsons I can't recall any other series lasting 20 seasons!

reply

Lost had one of the most cliche endings ever . they spoilt a great series with a typical ending done a multitude of times before. they may as well have had bobbi ewan turn up in the shower only to discover hes just dreamt a 6 season tv show due to excessively consuming cheesy poofs the night before

reply

Lost sucked, it had like half of a good season and the rest it was all pseudointellectual crap, and yes, they milk it until they couldn't anymore, and most of the mistery they created during the show, they didn't answer it and just forgot about it, a few they gave some lame answers.

FF looked way better than LOST.

reply

If you don't like Lost that's fine but what you are saying here is just plain wrong and makes you sound like a immature whiner.

reply

I agree, Lost was good until like season 3 and then it just got ridiculous.

They were making it up as they went along, the writers admitted to that!!!

I'm just glad I didn't waste 6 years of my life watching that show, I watched the entire series in just a month or two before the finale. It was easier to see how bad the plots were, watching it back to back like I did.

LOST was excellent until Season 4... then it just got silly. From 4 to 6 it was just like Flashforward. Dumb. Fun, but dumb.

"Lost" was great from beginning to end, in my opinion. Not a lot of shows these days can claim to have had a story from the beginning, and were set out to tell that story for a total of six seasons (Heck, most serialized shows on cable are lucky to even make it past one season nowadays).

"FlashForward" could very well have been one of those shows, if it just hadn't been executed so poorly during its middle, and had kept more focus on keeping its audiences interested and invested in its stories and characters (which I thought that they only began to do after the hiatus, but by that point no one cared enough to tune in). We may never know what the future held for "FlashForward", but I am happy with what we got (as bad as some of the earlier episodes were). I just wish there could have been one more season to wrap it all up, instead of leaving us hanging...
