Great direction, lame story
I think the critics have been far too kind to this. It's very well-made and the direction is sure-footed, but 99% of the story is in the trailer.

No man will marry a bilakoro
I agree that the story is a very uncomplicated one. But the acting and the writing are both subtle and honest, which truly made it a joy to watch. With most comedies, the will-they-won't-they romantic plot is usually so contrived, that even if you didn't know the outcome, you wouldn't care either way. But, in Submarine, I really found myself rooting for the central pair. The plot didn't consist of a last minute dash to the airport, but a slow realisation of trying to be honest, and getting passed the awkwardness and embarresment that comes with talking about your feelings, whether you're a teenager in first love or a couple who have been married for years.
