Does anybody else hate the main character?
I'm only about 15 minutes in but I can't stand him!!!
Does it get better or will the film be awful solely for the fact he's a jerk? (And the girl is, too.)

he's kind of a huge douchebag... but with good intentions

Yup, and the girl is an even bigger one. It doesn't get better, it kinda actually gets worse. Still, I didn't hate him. He is extremely immature, but has some sort of endearing quality.
shareI liked him a bit more when he went crazy and vandalised the house of the guy his mother hooked up with, lol.

You're supposed to hate him. I don't see how anyone could watch this and NOT be cheering the bullying victim who tells him to "F off and die".
He's pretty much a big joke and being able to hear his delusions of grandeur makes it all the funnier. (Also his manipulative, condescending and somewhat sadistic girlfriend Jordana also helps quite a bit.)
I think the thing that helps is that there are a plenty of characters who are arguably more horrible than him. In fact, don't we discover that even his own mother believes the schoolyard rumours that he's gay?
I think he must have been written as intentionally a jerk - and more than just an average teenager, as I said before - but why? It made everything fairly unenjoyable. But I'm glad you agree, anyway.
shareHe's a teenage boy who feels awkward in a lonely world ever-moving all around him. His actions (jerkish or otherwise) were all motivated by his desire to either help his family or give meaning and depth to his existence (ie share it with a girl). I don't see why everyone here seems to hate the kid, I'd just tell him "One day you'll look back on these moments and hate yourself but at least you'll be able to laugh. *beep* gets better." If you can't empathize with an adolescent who feels life is daunting maybe you were never a kid.
shareI went through similar things and was daunted and scared but I didn't bully people, especially not just to look cool. I also didn't abandon a partner at a cruel moment, worry about my parents' sex lives (creepy!) or try and set anyone's house on fire (though that part I mostly understood). Like I said, he's actually a jerk it's more than just being a teen.
shareI couldn't hate him because there were parts of his character that reminded me of where I was at 15. Not literally...I was bullied, not a bully myself...but I can resonate with his inner feelings of uncertainty, of wanting to be one of the crowd. And these feelings motivated his bullying nature. I can understand that, but I was too scrawny at that age to be a bully...LOL
Life, every now and then, behaves as though it had seen too many bad movies
He's a self-absorbed teenage kid, but I didn't hate him. The girl is a sociopath, and I saw in her some girls I knew when I was young. They hurt like hell at the time, but today I'm infinitely grateful to them for dumping me when the novelty of playing with my emotions wore off. Ending up with someone like that would be the ultimate nightmare.
shareThought he was all right. A confused kid; most people are at that age.
